Q: Why aren't joint bank accounts allowed in China?
This seems really odd to me that two or more family members cannot share a access to a family account. Why?
TIC - no why.
I used an account set up by my gf, and used her ID card to access it, for a couple of years - no questions asked (cos I had her ID card... yeah, makes perfect sense!!)
However, ask those foreigners to do anything on their own account... "Oh, can't do that, cos you're a foreigner.."....... grrrrr
iWolf:
I have had no difficulty opening bank accounts, getting a driver's licence, buying an apartment and other things without any help from a chinese person.
Well, no difficulty is a lie.....there were ubiquitous fuck arounds but it can be done if you keep returning with all the documents that the drone behind the counter wants each time. Nils bastardo carborundum and all that!!
It is equally odd that my mother in law can get access to my wifes account without showing anything but her own ID (I would have expected this to be where the almighty hukou is needed)
Your wife (and her family) already are entitled to your money anyway, so a joint bank account would be superfluous.

I have a joint account for savings with my wife through ICBC.
There is no card access and ID from both of us need to be presented at the same time to withdraw money.
It works for us and we save bucketloads and can seldom agree to withdraw any money at the same time while we live a very comfortable lifestyle.
