It is about keeping the free speaking blogger from saying what is real without the government slope on it, SKYPE has been blocked at times as well as they have refused to spy on the users. There was a big fight about that a few years ago, TOM.com told skype that they would use the gov spyware they qq uses on the skype servi ce in China and then guess what they lied and used it anyway. So skype pulled out, I guess skype has changed is ideas as they can be used but you can only download it from tom.com site so i am very sure they spyware is in effect.

Just use MSN save the hassle of having you nake web cams pics spread on the Chinese blogs

Skype is actually the largest provider of international calls with some 25% of all calls made with either their Skype to Skype service or Skypeout.  It would be completely detrimental to business here to ban it.  You're not going to find a lot of companies willing to install QQ outside of China for business communication.

Granted, the TOM skype is full of adware and who knows what else, but it is possible to download the actual version of Skype here.  Just download from another site like CNET or something as the actual Skype site redirects to the Tom one here.

There is an ongoing "discussion" to speak politely between the Govenment and Google which results in many things Google being blocked in China.  Twitter got itself into trouble during a series of recent problems involving train accidents, events in a Western province, go foh long (spelled wrong on purpose) and they were zapped.  Facebook, I undestand, for some purported relationship with Google (non-existant I think but I am not sure).

I am not passing judgment on the pro's nor the con's of the situation, only trying to tell you why IMHO they landed on the Index Prohibitorum.
