Q: Why can't I find a gf in Hangzhou?
I am a reasonably good looking Western man with a good job (by China standards). I am educated and humorous and a good listener. Am I missing something or are the women of Hangzhou more difficult to attract than in other places in China?

Make that an IPad 2. The local ladies are extremely aware of what the latest technology is on the market. If you buy her last years model, you will be considered stingy and not devoted enough to her social status.
So, here's the drill: For the first date, give her an IPhone. On your second date, present her with an IPad 2. Then she'll take you to meet her parents. After that, keep her regularly situated with Mah Jong money, and you'll have everything you need.
Actually, if you can't find a GF, you're not trying hard enough...
what a twist, i'm the first to give a legit answer. i will not reveal my secret but i will tell you this. hang around in the city center go to every shopping mall window shop til you drop, take the bus only. pay attention look for opportunities. and learn to smile back and have a basic convo in chinese especially "you meiyou qq?" get an android phone and get google translate. at home download qq intl 1.2 great translate feature. but be smart understand that you need to type english for the purpose of communication, not trying to impress the translation software. use simple basic english translate what you say back through the program to see if the translation is correct. if you want my secret it will cost you 10,000rmb but it will work wonders for your social life.
If you want to find a girlfriend you have to make sure she is single first of all. So get to know her and if you have common interests see if you can hang out and do the things you like to do. Just have a steady relationship and eventually if you two like each other you could start calling each other girlfriend/boyfriend. If you like a girl just go after her but don't be too desperate or aggressive. One thing that girls like is charm and since your Western good looking and humorous you shouldn't have a big problem. Which type of girl are you looking for since you just said girlfriend and not chinese or western. It really doesn't matter just use your charm good looks and sense of humor to attract her attention. Just because we forigners in China does not automatically make us desirable to alot of chinese woman. You mention your qualities like your educated and have a good job but no woman is going to know that by looking at you. For me personally i would say my lack of being able to speak Chinese is my biggest burden for meeting woman in chinese as i am in a 3rd tier city and English is not as wide spoken. Improve your Chinese this will help or just go to bars or clubs and gambi single woman .

Very true about not being automatically desireable for many of the local girls. In fact, some will go to great lengths to AVOID dating a foreigner. Then, even those who do or are willing to date foreigners may be picky: only date a certain race, nationality, etc. I had a blind date end quite abruptly, when she found out that Puerto Rico is part of the US. When she realized that I was a US citizen, she told me "I dont like Americans" got up and left.

Remember, your in HZ.. there's lots of us foreigner here. I've heard that Coco's is an obvious pickup joint - but it's rough - if they don't like you, you get beaten up. Maya is also popular.
Sit at Starbucks on Westlake for a few hours on the weekend.. (I can meet you there : we can go wingmen p)
Or, pop into Hangzhou Da Xa (HZ Tower) and window shop ... occasionally buy something (like that shirt I saw in there for 1900RMB...)
Yeah, there is a lot of foreigner competition here... and a lot of money (you've seen the car market here?? BMW's are the lower end of the spectrum! Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Ferarri, Aston Martin... Porsche almost a dime a dozen (well, ok, obviously not... but I've seen quite a few around).
Sorry to tell you, but here, you just ain't that special!
the first and important thing is you must to learn Chinese.
many hangzhou girls can not speak english.
hangzhou girls are a bit independent and value themselves high so i really suggest that you work hard to get one cause they are hard to get .........if not then change the city
