The government blocks sites that they cannot control the information on.  You either play by their rules or you don't get to play at all.

Get a good VPN and you'll be able to get past this issue.

not all censership is a bad thing I have to turn of the tv at home somtimes because I dont think a 3yr or 4yr old child should be exposed to the subject matter or launge. look at the average teenager. Did you know as much about Drugs ,sex ,or alcohole at the same age and would you like your young child knowing about it to early in life. but I do agree you need to draw a line a little closer to inform than to hide it out right China isnt the only one who censers the news I watch the sat news at home and find out things about issues in my own country that arnt reported to much latter if at all

Phil, your comment is a great example of how parents should be resonsible for their children. Having a country deciede the same issues for it's people, yeah sure we'll say that ends in a good way.

Some news were posted about Taiwan a few years back (less than 5) on FACEBOOK.  Fhe Government could not emove those news, so banned Facebook and a few others they can't contol.

Only way to do it from here is to subscribe to a good VPN, better if in HKG,

The censorship of the internet is one of the things I like least about living here. As an artist, some very good sites detailing historical and reference material are blocked here, for what reason, I don't have a clue. All in all, there are tens of thousands of sites unavailable to people living on the mainland.

Remember, all governments love control. It gives them a sense of power. One way to do this is to control the flow of information. The Chinese government often uses the reasoning that something is done (or undone) in order to preserve the "harmony of the society," and to some extent, I would have to agree. I see this in many of my Chinese students, and when I think of some of the social situations their American counterparts are involved in, I would much prefer teaching Chinese youth than American youth. The downside is that many of my Chinese students don't have a clue about what is happening outside of China (not that American students would, also).

However, I am always in favor of people making their own choices for their own lives rather than letting some other entitiy do it for them. I realize that in many circumstances, that is not the way this culture operates.

To tell the truth, I don't miss Facebook, and Youtube I can live without, although there are some very good instruction videos I would like to have access to. As other posters have pointed out, get a good VPN, and your problem should be taken care of. As of yet, I haven't gotten one because I have learned just to accept that the problem exists and simply to bide my time, productively channeling it into other areas.

Thanks kindly for your offer, Phil, but it's okay. No big deal, really. I could have purchased a VPN a long time ago, but haven't really missed having one!

I really miss Facebook and youtube. Facebook because it's how I keep in touch with my friends, and youtube because there are so many great music videos of good quality on there. I used to spend hours watching music videos, but it's more annoying to do so with youku. Many Japanese rock bands are not on Chinese sites, especially if they're barely known. However, I'm less than 200 points from the vpn. I don't know if I will buy it right after I earn the points. I'm leaning towards waiting until I have a certain amount of points for a title, then purchasing it for next year.

There are many workarounds in place for these sort of problems.  Basically, I lead an unfettered life on the Internet here.  The only problem that I have ever had with the Internet was when a neighbor of mine hacked my cable-based account and made off with it, free of charge ... until he was caught and shall we say reprimanded but not by me.  No problems since.
