Q: Why is China's international mail service so slow?

Sent a letter to the UK at the weekend and was told it would take 2 weeks to arrive despite it being airmail. The only other alternative was to buy an express service which would have cost over 200 kuai and taken five days. No thanks!

I don't know why it's so slow but it effectively disenfranchises me! I have a UK postal vote but by the time it arrives the election is over and they post it a month in advance!

There are a few tricks that will considerably speed up the mail delivery.  One of them will be if you are mailing a letter abroad, you would write the name and address in your native language, but since the country is npot writtenj in Mandarin, the letter hust sits at the Post Office waiting for an employee who speaks English ( or whatever) to translate the country name to Mandarin.

Same with incoming letters, if address written in mandarin they will get delivered in a fe days, if in English it will take from 1 ro 2 months.

Good point! I always use Chinese and English labels when mailing in or out of the country. Cuts the time down dramatically.
