I do not know about you and your experiences, but I feel food outside private homes in many cases could even be unsafe, probably cooked with recycle oil, not washed properly, etc.

To me, a home cooked Chinese meal is far superior to eating out in some restaurants

I could not disagree more. The food in China has far more variety and is sensational compared to the western version of Chinese food I was brought up on in Australia. In recent times the food available in Aus is more authentic as restaurants are opened to cater for the growing Chinese expat community. Of course the hygiene and food safety is not as good in China. In Australia many of the new restaurants take time to get up to par with our strict food health regulations and cop a few heavy fines. Personally though I have been (touch wood) very fortunate with food issues and I virtually eat where ever the food takes my fancy.

I feel bad for you, cause you must be missing out on so much of the great food that can be found in little holes in the wall here in China.  And the addiction the Sichuan peppers creates.... it's basically the reason I chose to come back here to work again.

I am with you DeBen. Sichuan food and a cold beer is a sensation like nothing else in the culinary world.

Your kidding, right. I used to eat Chinese food back in England until I discovered what real Chinese food is like. I did not touch another chinese takeaway or restaurant in England again. As you have already found out the food they call Chinese in England ain't Chinese. Get out and try more you don't know what you are missing.

Well I will give you that the buffets back home were pretty nice. The prices were cheaper. But you've probably been missing out on some of the best food that China has to offer. Try a variety of restaurants and different styles of foods. They have a restaurant from Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan Shanghai etc., places that you won't find anywhere else.

I see where you're coming from. There are some things that I think taste better at home, and I liked having broccoli in everything, no bones and knowing exactly what I was eating. However, I'd have to say the fried rice at the restaurants back home sucked. I didn't know what real fried rice could taste like until I came here. There are also some other types of foods I found in China that I'd never heard of at home, and I like them. I think perhaps, instead of saying food at home is better, I'd say the way they prepare it is more to my tastes, because I don't like chopped up bones or so much oil. Sometimes I miss Chinese food from home too. Whenever I say I don't always like Chinese food, people here tell me I haven't eaten the good stuff yet, but I don't think that's the problem. Even though Chinese food is good, I miss American food, and part of that is Americanized Chinese food, I guess.

Chinese food in the west has been adapted to our western palates, sensibiities, and ingredients.

I ordered Sichuan pork a few weeks ago, and it was so tame, nooooo spicey :(

I never found the food to be so great. Maybe next time. I had friends take me to real Chinese restaurants. They ate stuff that could be on a Survivor TV show. Almost always some kind of feet. Pass the centipedes please.
I did a 5 star tour, most meals were included. They were OK and I was given enough food to feed at least 4 people. I had good buffets at the Sheridans, but nothing I was crazy about. I had real beer fish with the good fish etc. I asked not to go to any where that served dog or cat. Maybe I missed something? I'd go crazy if I heard someone kill one.

GuilinRaf:

I know what you mean! Once my friends took me to a restaurant, and asked me if there was anything Iwould not eat. I said, half jokingly, "no dog". They stared at me, then got up and took me to anotoehr restarusant!

I loved "western" Chinese food before going to China.  Now I like it ok, but am missing the real thing....no comparison.
I just found an authentic Hunan restaurant here at home a few days ago, and was in heaven...ordered way too much.  Funny at my favorite Hunan resteraunt in Shenzhen I may drop 140rmb tops on a great meal for 2...here I dropped $60 all in with tip....with no beer I might add....that was the worse part!

you need to find a good restaurant or a nana that is a good cook, the food here is 100 times better than usa. you just have to watch out for the pitfalls

Chinese food in China is wonderful if you can afford to eat at the best restaurants or have a chinese wife. Unfortunately, most of the less expensive places have hygeine issues or lack of understanding of Western standards.

GuilinRaf:

So? See it as an ADVENTURE!! Ask yourself this: Would my family/friends have the guts to eat here? Then, like Nike Says: DO IT!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
