Q: Why Chinese people so afraid of dogs?
I have travelled throughout the world have have never expereinced the hatred that the Chinese people have, in my expereince, with dogs. I have a little pup that wouldnt say boo to a goose yet he is verbally abused, threatened and most amusing of all children picked up immediately should he come within 10 feet of them.
Excellent question. Chinese historically use dogs to refer to people they look down upon, because dogs obey blindly, i.e. blind loyalty.
For thousands of years, among them those who are against the imperial courts call civil servants 'slave dogs of the emperor'. In Chinese the term is '狗奴才', literally translated as 'dog slave'. Even to this day in their TV ancient drama series this term is frequently heard.
These 'people' can't tell the difference between honesty, loyalty, and unconditional love with blind obedience. You get a glimpse into the kind of culture you are dealing with by asking this question which is why I say it is an excellent question.
You may be interested to learn that another ancient culture also uses dogs in their derogatory remarks, the Jewish culture.
Both races have been enslaved. At a deeper level, I would say that is a form of self-hatred. Kind of hard to express what I mean in words here, hope you're getting it.

Well, I think that people have enough money now to own a dog, but have no idea how to take care of one. It's really sad, I've seen a little abuse of the puppy downstairs and I'm sure they don't feed them anything decent. They also don't care what the puppy plays with. I saw it chewing a little toy before, which it could have easily swallowed and choked on it. I think it's completely out of ignorance. That's not an excuse, but there's no such thing as animal rights so there's nothing I can do.
Dogs are for the most part not trained here. Like babies, they are encouraged to poop and pee wherever they happen to be. I see owners holding their leashes in their hands while the dog runs around the neighbourhood looking for a dumping ground. Dogs are not taught anything so when a chance to grab a quick ankle or finger comes along, you bet they are gonna take it. Dogs are animals after all, locked in a small dingy apartment all day and then...yippee!!!!!...they get out to the joys and delight of urination utopia!! Pee from everywhere, cats, dogs, cab drivers, neighbours, babies....you get the idea. After that, of course the dog is in a state of utter disarray, what to do, where to go, what to bite?
Consequently, Chinese fear dogs. I guess that's one valid reason but it can't be that simple ...can it?
Simple. Raising pets is something new in China. They are kind of a luxury item here. Because they havent got any contact with dogs before they fear them, specially old people.
I find Asians in general are scared of dogs. I had a Korean friend back home and whenever we walked down the street I had to be between her and any dogs bigger than knee height.
A buddy of mine owns a pub in Beijing, he allows stray dogs to hang around outfront and takes them to vets and such if they need attention. One day he saw some old man slowly stroll past the dogs and when he thought no one was looking kicked one in the face for absolutely no reason, the dog hadn't even looked at him. My friend ran outside and start yelling at him and he slinked away quickly like POS he is.
Another friend flat out had his dog stolen from him. It had a collar and everything and someone just took it. Someone saw some young woman and her pretty boy BF walking away with it, but figured there was a good reason so didn't say anything.
maybe their parents told them never to play with their food
One of the few meals that they run into that can eat them back.

i think it is very simple they do not like dogs, i went to Dubai,Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar they hate dogs, it is culture and their nature as well and also religion.

Yes, many in the Middle East have no pets. They consider them dirty. They are afraid of diseases.
Fear of disease is sometimes true. Basically ignorance as to proper care for pets.
I'm pretty sure it's because they grew up fearing the dogs of the few people who beat their dogs and trained them into ferocious animals. My mom said that when she was only 7 this huge dog would come bursting out of nowhere, charging and snarling everytime she tried visiting her friend. As a young child, it's easy to be scared of dogs through that and develop a lifelong fear.
To those who are saying, "It's one of the few meals that can bite back," I find that offensive. It's almost derogatory by saying they are barbaric for eating dogs of all animals, dogs that are considered beloved pets in the U.S. It's different cultures. I also feel like people will say in response to me, "Learn to take a joke," but I also find that offensive. It's like someone dismissing you, dismissing something you're actually quite passionate about and saying, oh, you're making too big of a deal out of it.
seriously? I know many people keeping dogs and I also have one. I dont see fear. (Not to say there is ridiculous judgment saying Chinese are fond of dog meat...how can we be afraid? Lol)
I agree with the OP. If you listen to grandparents talking to theirgrandchildren you will understand why. Almost 100% of the old people I hear tell the children, careful, that dog will bite you. Even when the dog is completely passive.

I've seen it a lot of times... a parent / grandparent or whoever is outside with their kid, and a dog appears wagging its tail and being nothing but friendly and gentle, and the caregiver goes mental trying to pick the child up and protect it from the vicious hellhound that's about to savage the kid and give him rabies because "as everyone knows", that's what dogs do.
I was walking with my girlfriend once and we stopped to play with a puppy that was running around. It was licking my hand and pretending to bite me as puppies do..just playing .. completely normal behavior for a pup but she was freaking out about how it attacked me and I had to go to the hospital.
