Q: Why choose China instead of Japan?
WHy do expats choose China?
Japan has better infrastructure, better health system, higher pay, higher standard living, more open minded people, better commodities, healthier, more organized, etc.
Why choose China?
Japan is a great place and totally agree with you on what you have said. However during my stint in Japan the frantic pace of working in Japan is to much and luckily it was a 6month transfer. The other point of Japan is the strict visa process they have in place and some see China as a place with softer and loop holes in gaining employment in Asia.
On top of this China is booming as was Japan in the 80's and early 90's.
Japan was waaaay too expensive a place to get set up in, China is much cheaper.
I'd still love to see and experience Japan for all the reasons you've mentioned, maybe it can be next on the list.
Of the nearly 200 countries in the world, I was given the option between the two, only based on a handful of factors my home country excels in anyway. The choice was that simple and OP has clearly outfoxed me.
Here's a question: of all the rich, not-extremely-screwed-up countries in Europe, why do some people still choose to go to Greece?
The same for South Korea, they are better but the pay is not, by standard of living a higher salary can be eaten quicker in these two countries, was there for a year but had to pay for my own apartment, my god is it expensive
Japan has had its time in the sun, China is obviously the next superpower.

Well I know this is a China bashing site, but unfortunetly I think they will be. I usually jump on any bandwagon thats slating the Chinese but you have to admit, their economy is strong, their army is getting better etc.

I could see that militarily, but looking at the numbers they've still got a long way to go to compete with America or Europe even after tears of recession in the west. Their large GPD is pretty tiny per capita, and everyone in Hangzhou and Shanghai is just waiting for the housing bubble to burst. Everyone knows it's going to happen, and their reaction is to invest as much in real estate as possible and try to cash in before the collapse. I'm sitting in a neighbourhood of empty skyscrapers, within walking distance of three empty shopping malls, and there are still construction sites everywhere putting up new crap that's gonna sit there empty. And it's impossible to rent without sub-sub-sub-sub-leasing, even though the same company I'm paying my 1200 to also owns about 50 other (empty) units in the building, which have months worth of utility bills taped to the door.
Remember what knocked Japan out of complete economic dominance in the late 80s, and they've never fully recovered. Or what hit the whole world in the 1870s, and again in the 1980s, and again in 2008. It's the exact same pattern again and again and the current situation in China fits to a T.
Masahiro - it is just the way it is. Most of us didn't have a choice between China and Japan. Would you ask a married man "Why choose that wife instead of a supermodel?"

I'd love to see Japan, though, their people seem more polite, more... familiar with the concept of "face"...
From what you said in your question, your question should have been why choose China. You cant compare China with Japan where if Asia you were after you have Korea, Thailand ect.

You would of stayed in your home country if this is what you were after.
The bullshit I'd have to put up with from the Chinese is preferable to the bullshit I'd have to put up with from the Japanese, to put it bluntly. I mean, if I'm going to be looked down upon as an outsider either way I'd rather have it happen to me while I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt rather than a three piece suit.

My sisters father in law is Japanese, and he told me that I made the right decision. He had to put up with a lot of stuff becasue he married a Vietnamese girl. and his son because he married a hispanic-latina.

China is bigger which means there is more options for traveling and to see a lot of things. Japan is nice from what I've heard but if you have looked up recently your current events you would have known that fewer and fewer people are interested in learning english everyday so for a teacher it would sort of kind of be a nightmare.
Honestly, Japan never even crossed my mind. However, some of my friends who are STILL fighting the Cold War asked me the same question. I told them the same thing. It never crossed my mind...
