Q: Why is deodorant so expensive in China?
Why is deodorant so expensive in China?
In Europe and South Africa deo costs around 15 Y a can while here the same make costs around 50Y-60Y
Cheap Hint for China: Put a Bay leaf under each armpit, so when you sweat, you smell like soup!
It is the law of supply & demand. If supply is low and demand is low, then the price will be high.
It's not only a matter of supply and demand logic in China. You have to consider the Chinese mentality too.
A brand, even a foreign brand, will prefer to set the price of their product high so that people will consider the brand of a better quality or more famous than another brand. In Chinese mind, "showing off" what they can purchase is also a sign/symbol of their apparent wealth, the more expensive a product, the better people will look at them.
Think about brands like Nike, Adidas, Rebook; they are common brands in Europe or in US, but here, their prices is out of mind.
The same for shower gels, such as Nivea or Axe, in Switzerland, you can sometimes get 3 tubes for 60 yuan, here you get one for this price.
Taxes on imported products may be a reason, but I believe "face" is a more important factor.
I agree with all of the above but then why doesn’t "Chinese law" apply....(making 'cheap'/fake brands that cost half the price?)
If Western outlets can retail a can of deo at 15 Y a Chinese brand must be able to do it for 10 Y and sell it for 20 Y
Ironically I find perfume here on cheaper than in the west.
TedDBayer:

If you are residing in China you should consider setting up a Tao Bao account. I use the Nivea Cool Kick deodorant which costs 45 yuan for 1 can in the supermarket however, on Tao Bao I paid 84.60 yuan for 4 cans including the postage.
