Though I thankfully wasn't personally confronted with this problem, I know quite a few people who were refused from various teaching positions just because they looked Chinese...
Is it so hard for people to grasp that someone with an Asian face isn't Chinese? That English is our native tongue??
Just drive me nuts!

Kinda goes back to schools wanting a genuine white face for their foreign teachers...it just wouldn't look good vis-a-vis the parents, who dish out the cash, to have the 'foreign teacher' look just like them.
They just can't grasp that someone with asian traits could be so different from them. Likewise, it doesn't really register in their brains that Americans, Canadians, British or Australian aren't all white...
It is all about appearances and marketing.
When it comes to EFL, it is the year of the WHITE MONKEY every year.
I heard it's because the ROA are not as good as 'Mericans, Bristishs and Irish land whales to teach English, because it is often not their native languages. It's not about ROA vs 'Merica, it's about native language, I heard from the crying secretary at work. She always keep chitchatting!
only few of the students truly want to learn english , most of them are there just to fantasy about english and engllish men ...
i dont think being a native speaker helps . there are more english speakers in india than america and england combined.. .those so called american accent are looked down upon there ..
Hehe...When I was in university, we have native English speakers of Asian faces, White faces and Black faces.
I found most of the time, students seem to like the Asian faces with fluent native English and Mandarin than the others. Because they may understand the students better and deliver comparatively more interesting classes. I guess that's the most important part in being a good English teacher.
Well, there're all kinds of people. It's not likely that you go around and criticize everyone who judges. Just be yourself. But as of in a working place, I guess capability matters most, and also how you get along with your colleagues and boss.
they nee a whit face .. yellow, black ,browns not allowed.. what can we do about it ?
do you think they care about learning english ?
I have had some trouble finding a job...I am white but non-native (and why don't I have blue eyes? ). I am Bulgarian, English major, American accent. Don't understand this rule either as a lotta native speakers have never been in a classroom before or know their own grammar well. Going to interviews which go well until the headmaster says - we need a native. Anyway I've been lucky for a 2nd time now and even going to the city I want to go to.
But I did hear a story about a Japanese American teacher that had to hide in the toilet after class, so the parents don't see her or she'd get fired (she was working in a private school). I think she lasted about a month and went back home...
And I did see a job ad on this site (posted by the notorious Henry ESL ) which had this line in it : 'salary - 6000 for the white, 5000 for the black and 8000 for the native'
Hahahah for freak's sake, had to show that to my students and had a laugh, ridiculous....
They want their foreigners to be very foreign and their Chinese to be very Chinese. Any middle ground is very very uncomfortable for them.
Alva,
"Is it...........................Chinese?" Girl, NO it's not that difficult but we're talking about the Chinese! The South Koreans do the same thing!
