Korean too? The men all have their own look, but I cannot tell one Asian actress from the next. I would say it is not the same with Asian American actresses. They all seem to have their own look. It seems to be only female celebrities for an Asian audience. When I walk around China, the woman all look very different. Does anyone else notice this?
Society has a rigid definition of what beauty should be, light skin and western features, the less Chinese looking the better. Look at Fan Bing Bing, she doesn't even look Chinese and they worship her. So a Chinese actress is supposed to be a vapid western woman who never goes outside.
el1288:
What is exactly "looking Chinese"? And why does Fan Bingbing fall into the non-Chinese-looking category? If looking Chinese automatically generates the image of slanted eyed, bamboo hat wearing short people of the East then I'm afraid you have mistaken the typical western racist outlook on barbaric Chinaman as the real Chinese. Fan Bingbing is obviously mongoloid, just because she has double eyelids, high nose bridge and a sharp jaw line does not mean she is less Chinese looking; that is rather a foolish projection of westerner's superior feeling to their own looks. If you insist actresses like Fan Bingbing are more western looking and less Chinese, then it is the shame that westerners have forcefully shoved their own look down everyone else's throat. China is a multi-ethnic country, there is one thing as looking a certain Chinese ethnicity - which let me kindly remind you does not consist of western stereotyping - but nothing as looking "Chinese".

i'd say a lot of the male actors look very homogenous too. but men are intended to be charismatic with mature features, while the women must look like an axolotl: all youthfulness. skin that looks like it's never been exposed to daylight.
to be fair, Westerners have a fetish for tanned skin because the average Joe is a pale office worker, and a tan makes you look fun, cultured and leisurely. it would be different if most of us were working fields.
i'm not saying China's abnormal obsession with pale Western features is normal, but it is at least partly reflected by Westerners' attraction to tan skin, Asian eyes and other exotic features.
ScotsAlan:
Interesting point about the tanned skin.
It is indeed seen as a sign of wealth in the west, whereas pasty white is seen as a sign of poverty and being dull.
Strawberry66:
Chinese are colored. Most westners are white,it is understable for you guys want to get tanned. If Chinese get tanned,it might look close to dark. And not all Chinese are light skin,my sister's skin is quite close to the dark,so why would she wants to get tan? Mine nis light but not very light,so why would I want to get tanned to look close to dark? I have met white people who does not like dating dark skin people.
A skin color does mean lots about the features. Usually white people have better looking features like with nice looking eyes and good shaped face and generally much taller white the back people usually have wide nose and dark skin and Chinese people usually have the flat face. I believe for most people white race are the best looking race in the world. Its not being racist.
Spiderboenz:
Um... if I saw a Chinese woman that looked like a salamander, I would runaway screaming, probably.
coineineagh:
@spider: my example is unscientific. axolotls stay in their newt form due to environment, and humans are atrracted to youthfulness out of sexual selection. it used to serve a purpose, because juvenilization caused bigger brains, better parental care and more social interaction. i believe China is taking the appearance aspect too seriously: they want their women with immature bodies and minds.
there is only one actress
Scandinavian:
I have no clue. I suspect I was born an Emperor. Status is not something you earn !!!
Scandinavian:
now bend down and kiss my shoes, don't worry, they are produced in Germany so no chance of them being toxic
also has to do something that actress and singers are only known in China.
those who are known are different and mostly hybrid not pure chinese
They clone them in a little machine under the ground in a secret base.
It is very important that people don't copy the wrong look in China!
You must copy what we give you!
How about Sandra Oh? Am I right about her name? She was in Sideways and she is incredibly hot. And doesn't look like anyone but her.
Beautifulsoup:
I mean Chinese actresses on Chinese television. I see anyone on TV I cannot tell which one is Fan Bingbing.
xinyuren:
I wonder how successful she would be in the Korean industry.
Because uniformity and conformity are what everyone wants. That's the reason all cities in China (and Korea) look the same, their markets are all the same, their TV shows are all the same, their music is all the same and they look, act, think, dress and believe the same. It's better to be part of the crowd than stand out on your own.
Not everyone looks like Bingbing
but most of their names seem to be
names of Pandas in foreign zoos
Hey soup! I watched Sideways last night and if you think Sandra Oh is ugly you must be real fkd up.
Mate, she is piping hot!
xinyuren:
Sideways was a great film. Yeah, Sandra Oh is hot in it. But she's not Chinese, she's Canadian.
Shining_brow:
I must be fked up... I looked at photos of her, and nope! Sure, nice body, but there's something that just turns me right off!
Same with Lucy Liu...
Come on! all Chinese people look the same , sometimes I can't even find the difference between Chinese male and female !!
Actually, in the Chinese's eyes, all the western actresses looks the same, so that is because you don't know more about them
