Q: Why do Americans get a rock star treatment in China?

Why do Chinese people like Americans so much?  From the American news media I thought they'd hate us but they seem to love us. I always got rock star treatment - it became overwhelming sometimes.

Well BaoanGuy, I think it might have to do with where you are.  I am also in Baoan district and not many westerners are here, so we get the rock star treament.  If I go to Club Viva in Futian I am just 1 of many foreigners and no big deal...unless it's a "good" night!

just becoz they treat you nice does not mean they like you. that said , many people here secretly or not secretly want to leave. (but not as many as i originally thought) . many people here would like to live in an opern minded society. and many chinese believe in being hospitable. also no one understands that "the govt is going to do whatever the govt wants" more than the people who live here

They love our pop culture. American pop culture is popular all over the world. They are also very interested in learning English, and American English is sort of the standard.

woody:

I don't dislike Americans and have had a lot of American friends over many years but I can tell you that I detest American pop culture and the celebrity worship that goes with it. It is sad that so many other nations are now copying this trend and all the fake bullshit that surrounds it.

yes woody i agree 100% i've learned more about american pop culture while being in China than all my 20+ years in the States. it amazes people here that i didn't watch TV in America. you'd think i was killing babies with the reaction i got when i said i don't watch reality shows, follow vampires, or care about some celebrities hair...its really crazy

It's the only other place in the world they study about.
I don't want to come off like I'm hating but this thing that anyone who speaks English is American is a bit dumb.
The other day, I was bombarded by my Chinese friends wishing me a happy Thanksgiving  and asking me where my Turkey is? For the 100th time, I told them I'm not American, and that is an American holiday. They probably know more about it than I do.
They treat you like a rockstar because of the following reasons:
1. They want to practise English with you.
2. They want to be seen with a foreigner, esp an American (Like a businessman showing off his new Rolex)
3. They want to marry you (To get a visa and enjoy the goodlife)
4.They want to have sex with you, because of those 'rumors'.

I must admit though, America is the birthplace of the free-thinking world. The origin of so much creativity and knowledge. So many advancements in the field of science. So much to be admired in this country.
The only problem comes about when the elite in America tries to enslave the world in debt and poverty. Using economic assassins, the media and their war machine to rain anarchy upon the Earth.

And yes, most Americans are easy-going, fun, civil and cool. Just like in the movies. haha. What's not to like? I'm jealous.

I never noticed the rock star treatment. I was expecting fans at the airport. There were only two. One wanted to marry me and I did not know her, It took two days to get rid of her nicely. But this is a normal day for me. If it were a hundred women , then yes rock star. I think I would like them tearing at my clothes. Yes I wanna be a rock star. But only two, I am shamed.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
