Q: Why do Chinese folks like the word 赔 so much?
赔 means compensation. They want you to compensate them for literally everything.
- Your kid pushed my kid, pay for it.
- But it is just a scratch.
- 赔！
You scratched my bike, 赔！ You broke my ruler, 赔！You stepped on my toe, 赔！ You got me pregnant, 赔！
赔！赔！赔！
My Chinese friend told me to never lend your car /bike/scooter to Chinese guys. If they get into accident, they will be blaming you! Instead of getting compensation for your damaged vehicle, you will be paying their medical bills.
When my kid was in primary school, he had a fight with a boy & broke his arm, the teacher said I should buy 2 chickens for the boy. I told my son to play with older boys. Why do Chinese teach their sons to be a sissy-girl instead of being a man? Who would play sports with you if you ask them to pay for every push & shove?

I'd say the reason is a combination of the culture of face, and the culture of rampant materialism. One has 5000 years history (

many locals are brain damaged due to govt brainwashing. i got that once when i broke up with a girl. she demanded i compensate her to the tune of 5000rmb.

there was a story on echinacities about a foreigner accidentally walking into the womens locker room at a hotel. the women was freeloading the use of the pool, she wasn't a guest. she didn't even notice the guy but just sensed it. because he just left as soon as he realized he was in the wrong room. but she sued the hotel and the foreigner and got 6000 (but she was seeking a lot more) the fact that she received anything is ridiculous.
when i first got here people would talk to me about how ridiculous the american legal system is because of "human rights" and "accountability". but china's legal system is a pucking joke. i think it has to do with the ccp effortss to keep people weak minded. they keep people in china thinking they are the victims. someone who believes they are the victim will not stand up for themselves but instead ask for compensation or walk away with their heads down. this is why foreigners need to be extra careful, there are 1 billion people trying to find ways to separate you from your finances and the law is dehind them.

i beg to disagree. every aspect of the life is controlled by the govt. this political system has been carefully crafted to foster humble , subservient , docile behavior.

But hasn't the culture already done that? The idea is that the government is mom and dad, and the people are the children who must at all times obey their parents.
Chinese parents vs. Chinese government. Seems like the same thing to me.

but the govt controls the culture. or at the very least they made slight alterations to the culture to make it a tool for control. remember pre-1949 , the family dynamic was different. a man could have many wives. people did not have to get married. mao ordered people to marry and be fruitful. and then the ccp changed the family dynamic again with the 1 child policy. essentially, whatever aspect of chinese culture that could not be incorporated into the ccp as a tool to control people was eliminated in the cultural revolution.
I could not remember when was the last time I used that word,Probably 5 years ago or even longer. it's a dead word to me.
