Q: Why do Chinese Girlfriends always ask "Do you miss me?"?

I am dating the second girl I have dated so far in China, so I would still consider myself somewhat of a novice in this dating scene. I've noticed that both girls ask "Do you miss me?" in text messages after they leave my apartment. I always say "no" because it has literally been 5 minutes since she left. Sometimes I'm glad to have some time away from her.

I feel like something is lost in translation here.

It sounds they are not confident for themselves which is no good.

In my opinion,It's fine to ask your partner"do you miss me or do you love me"  sometimes, but should not ask after you leave from her or his apartment in a few mins or every day.it's going to be annoying to be honest.

I could not remember when was the last time I asked my husband this question,It's like a year ago or even longer cause I do know that He misses me and Loves me through his actions,No need to ask and I prefer to hear he says it without me asking.

and The most important is,I am so confident in my man LOL.

I am a Chinese woman btw.

Chalk it up to the lower emotional maturity of Chinese women and the slight narcissistic personality of their generation. They need the reassurance that you're not just playing with them.

You are expected to miss them and beg them back to your arms while understanding that they need time to be with their boss, family and friends.

You are not expected to talk to any other female (other than your mother) under any circumstances while understanding that the 60 guys (not their father) that they SMS, talk to, and QQ regularly are "just friends".

It's also fun to note that Chinese woman will tell you that they miss you even after just a casual encounter. It's just something that they say ("Happy every day!") and not an indication that they have a longing for you.

Tell me about it my wife still asks me constantly if I love her. I don't even answer now. It's irritating.

It's important to consider Chinese culture when trying to translate their ideas.  China is still a very communal society, even as their government is rapidly changing.  They live together as families, eat together, and depend on each other for day to day living.  Chinese girls, especially, spend a lifetime of depending on others.  First their parents, then their husband, and finally their sons.   Being attached to a foreigner introduces a big risk in their eyes.  It's exciting to them, but leaves them quite insecure and Chinese are naturally insecure in my opinion.  Foreigners are much less insecure when left alone.  This may not be the sole reason for the irritating, clingy behavior, but it is likely a big reason.

This is not a good answer because it doesn't reveal any expertise or personal experience regarding the use of the phrase "I miss you" or "do you miss me". It is a very generic response and doesn't deserve an upvote...

In my experience it's only the desperate girls chasing you...even when you have a serious gf...that pull this crap.

They are fishing for a reaction...you need to ignore it or find a way to blow it off.

If a girl here really cares for you...those feelings will for the most part be implied and need not be expressed in a desperate manner.

I have at least 3 girls messaging me all the time with the same desperation but all know I have a gf and I am not interested...hence the games.

Lost in translation.  "I miss you" in the West and "I miss you" in China have different connotations and underlying meanings.  Don't confuse the two.  Without complicating the issue, "I miss you" in China, simply translates as "I was happy to see/be with you and I hope we can see/be with each other again soon."  There is no desperation or inferiority or insecurity built into that statement.  It's kinda like saying: "Hey, I like you.  You're a nice guy."  That's all.  Nothing to read between the lines.

aside from the fact that you duplicate posted this, you've actually given me a great answer here.

I can't say why you are getting downvoted, though. It just goes to prove that the voting system on this site is being rigged and manipulated by the "regulars".

Cancelled my answer, sorry OP, a shallow comment here got to me, realised there is no point in trying to make points/opinions on internet social platforms because certain people hate to be challenged.

umm.  it seems someone needs to get a dictionary or google the word "culture".

My gf says it all the time. I never really thought about it, and just answer with the automatic "Of course I do!" Maybe it's a little messed up, but if you can ignore it, do.

Probably it's the only interrogative question they know to ask after making "love". By the way, the word LOVE in China means SEX. That's it.

I normally just reply, "Miss you? I don't even remember your name."  Then my wife says, "That was only funny the first hundred times."

philbravery:

once I was late calling my wife so when she started complaining I just said

I left my Girlfriends home early so I could call you.

(and that is how I ended up buying her the dining room furniture)cool

I really got to take time  think about my reply's first no

This made me actually laugh out loud, not in a wry, half smile kinda way; an actual laugh.

Gentlemen, no matter what the nationality of the lady or the circumstance, if a woman in your life asks "do you miss me?", then the question is mostly rhetorical - just make life easier and say yes!

I prefer the reply,

"Yes, of course, but my aim is improving."

I usually then guauge as to whether to duck or if the answer went safely overhead.
