Q: why do Chinese give a red envelop "hong bao" with some money inside?

Because in Chinese culture, you are not supposed to "open" a gift in front of the person giving it to you, so it is placed inside a hong bao.
Most of hung baos ar given to children and un married teen agers during New Lunar Year festival.
It is also a discrete way of bribing others.

Hong Bao is suppose to be lucky and is typically given at the beginning of spring festival for a luckier and richer new year, some where in their tradition it changed into every occassion.
