Q: Why do Chinese people like to glance at others' shoes?

I notice that very often, especially in the service industry. Is it a way to give better service to people with cleaner shoes? Or some other sort of fairy tale superstition?

I think it's because they want to know the owner of the shoe that ends up kicking them in the ass. In the case of well-polished shoes, they can admire their own reflection, fix their hair and/or squueze pimples.

Social marker, the more expensive the shoes, the more face ?

Robk:

Yup, exactly. Same reason they glance at each other's phone.

If you are using some crappy Chinese brand... to the back of the bus you go!

I'm working with 9 - 12 y old kids. I came back this semester with new UK, black leader Barker's shoes. All kids looking to the floor, while I'm walking around the classroom.

Sometimes, I came to the class with 25y old suede leader (Italian) boots. They all look at my size, me thinks!angel

One change in myself I saw in China made me feel a little weird.......

I started to notice girls shoes!!!

Bloody strange!....never paid much attention in the UK and now I'm back I don't notice them again.

I wondered why all of a sudden i'd acquired this "fetish".

Not in a perverted way....just curious.

I put it down to the sheer outlandishness of some of them "how do you walk about in those?" or that they seem really proud of their footwear....

But again how many female shoe shops are there in China?.....loads!...its all that shopping malls seem to be full of.

Is this just me or did anyone else start noticing this too?
