Q: Why do Chinese people laugh?

One guy moved my motorbike when I was in a bar. Then he came and asked me to move it because he had moved it into the wrong place. I was furious, touching my back is like touching my girlfriend. It was explained to him why I was angry. My girlfriend even told him that if the bike fell while he was moving it we all know he would just run away.

He laughed and I almost clocked him.

More seriously one time I was swimming. I was taking a rest at the side of the pool when I suddenly noticed one man lying face down in the water. It was hard to tell what he was doing. His head came to the top and then back under. I looked at the lifeguard and the lifeguard was looking at him also.

Maybe 30 seconds passed and the lifeguard realised the guy had drown. He went running over to get the guy. Next to the drown guy was another Chinese guy holding onto the side of the swimming pool. He was so close to the drown guy and when he saw the lifeguard trying to pull the guy out of the water without much success, he started smiling and laughing and made no attempt at all to help him. The lifeguard even asked him for help but all he received was a laugh.

Other lifeguards came and managed to revive the guy who had drown, all the while the other guy was holding onto the side of the pool laughing.

8000 years of culture has taught the Chinese to find humor in all situations! I find the locals relish in the misery or pain in others it makes them look better!

It's just a matter of cultural difference.

When embarassed or not knowing what to do, Chinese will just laugh.

Oh well knowing that I'll make a point of laughing at them when they get injured or someone dies... Can I point and laugh or just laugh?! I want to try and fit in more... You know... Wink

Njord, pointing should be no problem... but I don't think you'd be allowed to either hold your stomach or wipe a tear from your eye afterwards.

How can you laugh when someone right by your side looks like they just died. I can't get over it. What was this guy embarrassed about? Being a @.?* because if not I don't know else there was to be embarrassed about.

Just remember if you are in a life or death situation and need a helping hand to survive, just roll over and die while they watch you.
