Just five minutes at Guamao subway station and this question needs no explanation. But even elevators? Is it so damn difficult to let people get out before they bulldoze their way in? Honestly sometimes I get the urge to be a bowling ball and give them a taste of their own medicine. I mean, wasn't it just a few months ago that some people got trampled to death on a Line 4 escalator? I have never seen such selfish herd behavior. Even in India, the people are decent enough to let people exit first - and they they make a mad dash for the seats, windows, and roof!
Seems to me they couldn't change this even if they wanted to. It's simply bred into them. They will even do it at the train station when they already have a reserved seating arrangement. Some say that Chinese have always had to fight for everything and so on and that's why this behavior exists. to me, it's just utter selfishness and nothing more.
giadrosich:
They are all after the last hot jaozi across the street!
yian:
LOL. Reserved seating. I saw this so many times when going places it stopped entertaining me. People DO rush and push and barge and gouge eyes to be first into the fray. The clever (read normal) foreigners just stand back and get on last. And guess what? They get the seat they reserved. Ungelievable!
Frankly_Speaking:
I agree... with 1.5 Billion people the herd mentality has now become genetic.
Just came back from Hong Kong and Macau. What a pleasant experience as people were generally polite to me, my wife and each other. Lining up to get on the subway was commonplace. Loved it there!
The Chinese Mainland could learn a lot form from Hong Kong and it's residents.
crimochina:
the funny thing is china is trying to force HK and Macao to change.
the thing that i dont understand is, nobody is complaining or even bothers to point out the problem its like nobody cares and this is why nothing will change
DHorn:
very very true. u have to acknowledge something is wrong before it becomes a problem, right?
AdamE:
Very true. No one ever says anything it seems.
There was one time where I was at an amusement park and there was about 200 people in front of us waiting to get on the ride. I was with some Chinese friends and they decided to just hope over the rope and go in front of everyone to the front of the line. So I followed them.
To my suprise, no one said anything. We literally bypassed about 200 people and even hopped a rope to do it. Yet not a single person yelled at us or complained about us doing it. I really don't understand that logic.
The longer I've been in China the more I've learned to really stand my ground when it comes to lines, especially at subway stations. I've certainly offended some people by standing my ground, but in my mind if youre going to cut in front of me, then you should expect theres a chance I'm going to push you out of the way as well.
Just a couple days ago I was in line to buy a ticket at the subway when a girl just bypassed the entire line and stepped in front of me and tried put her money on the counter. I took her money and pushed it aside. People seemed shocked that I did this, but I'm suprised no ones shocked to think its ok for that person to just bypass the entire line.
Sometimes when getting off a crowded subway I will become a human wrecking ball. If someones in front of me trying to get on the subway before I get off, I'll just walk right though them, in this case no one has ever gotten upset at me, they seem use to it. The only exception is if it's an elderly person I will let them have their way out of respect to them.
Because back in the communist days if you didn't fight to the front of the ration line, you got no rations.
Back in Nam, if you didnt fight to the front of the line for ammunition, you were handed rocks and a bayonet.
badtroll:
I'm 30, but you know I get like 10 thumbs up if i say "back in 'Nam" and some cool points!
mArtiAn:
Hahaha, yeh, thumbs up for that one. But I actually WAS in Nam, and it's no laughing matter. It was 'Tottenham' in North-East London, Arsenal were playing and tensions were higher than an astronaut on cocaine.
Yes,its so annoying, they just want to go fast, don't care about others. I am so sick of their rudeness like crazy ,Sometimes I just wanna bite them. LOL
Maybe I should learn some kongfu.what do you think ? LOL
Snoopy:
Bite them? I want to give them a thrashing they'll never forget!
They are simply R-U-D-E and even more S-E-L-F-I-S-H.
Manners are missing in most parts of this country. It's kind of like the Titanic - every man for himself.
Because they're rude and have no education or culture despite a 5,000 year old history which they love to rub in foreigners' faces.
It's not the pushing and shoving to get out that really bugs me. It's the way they just shuffle around and stare at everything once they're inside! They're in such a damned hurry to be in first and out first, but when they're inside a shop or event they just take their sweet time and never think about people behind them that might want to get past them. I'm always having to push shopping carts, baby carriages, baskets, and sometimes even people gently out of my way.
