It's so frustrating and unnecessary. Why can't they open things in a new tab? Is there any way to change the default settings?

This depends upon your browser and upon its the settings. One has a choice in most browsers to either open items in (a) a new window or (b) a new tab. It's not just Chinese websites that do this either.
Check your browser settings. Opera, Google, Firefox are the most malleable. Internet Explorer has a mind of its own, so to speak, and is the slowest of the lot.

This does seem to be relevant to only some Chinese sites. I use Firefox, Chrome and occassionally IE. All are setup to open in a new tab, but some sites seem to overide the settings and open in new windows anyway.
Well like all of China it is about numbers... so if the site creates a new page, not only does it double the chances for adds but creates a hit list to make sure all those paying get the most for the buck.
fix your brownser.... or just don't surf chinese websites, they are loaded with spams, trojans, ads, viruses....
