I have just been reminded that it is Valantines day tomorrow, and someone asked me what I will be buying for my wife.
Now, lets think about this. Because of the difference between the Chinese and the international calendar, we have 2 Valantines days, two birthdays, two wedding anniversaries (because of difference between the ceremony and getting the book) and two new years. Add Christmas to that too.
Am I alone in thinking this is a little unfair? Are Chinese women hijacking other cultures for their own personal gain?
I think they are.
Guys. I think you should all consider this. As long as Steak and BJ day doesn't exist in China, Valentines day shouldn't either.
And girls... Good luck finding a decent steak in China to serve to your men
that's great, now i can get double shots of scotch, double dinner, double bedroom exercises, i mean we want to be fair about this, honey where is double remote control for the 2 tv's, also bring some wine out here for my twin mistresses. what a great life.
Robk:
That's right. Maybe Chinese lovers day I spend with my Chinese wife and maybe Valentine's day I should be spending with my foreign girl friend. Let's be fair here!
Just spend some money. Don't be so Scottish.
icnif77:
Once somebody told me Scottish wash the toilet paper after use. I didn't believe him.
Then he asked me: 'Do you know, how do they dry it off?'
Me: 'No! Can I have another scotch?'
He: 'outside, on the ropes! ...slurp.... Because, wind blows for free (of charge)'.
Shining_brow:
Actually, Icnif, you hang it on the clothes-line and beat the sh!t out of it
icnif77:
Ozz-men (you) should be careful when 'beating': 'one can reuse paper only if it is still single pieced!'
'True masters of the paper recycling' had wording here.
For once I agree with icnif. Just buy some fecking flowers an be done.
Now lets see if MrA accidentally on purpose 'forgets' for the 5th straight year, keeping a perfect record...
icnif77:
Today I downloaded 'Citizenfour', L. Poitras documentary about 'Up-yours'. Free on FrostWire. watching now....
ambivalentmace:
i bought the 20 pack of roses for 80 rmb yesterday, so im good for another year.
ScotsAlan:
And do I have to buy more on Chinese Valantines day? When is it by the way? October? Just before my wifes Chinese Birthday, whiich is a month before her western birthday. Wait wait... I forgot to add that Chinese also want to do Thanksgiving. I dont do that in my country. Why should I do it here. And haloween. What next? Passover gifts. Buy a big meal for the end of Ramadan. Jusst wait.... within a few years we will be expected to buy gifts every 2 weeks.
ScotsAlan:
I bet you could add lots more gift giving oppertunities than I can icnif. Go on, list a few :-)
icnif77:
My T-shirt: 'I'm sin-gle, let's min-gle' needs to be washed.
'add-it': I dropped my watch last week. Repair =1600Rmb. Next week (if cops return my book with new RP), I'm going to HK: will look for some bullion for around 20K Rmb. These are all 'presents' I intend to buy for 'me-single-day'.
MissA:
No, Alan, in my book people get one birthday, one Valentines day if they care, such holidays as they care about and the New Year they care about. So I'd say screw 'Chinese Valentine' but you do get her pissed on whisky next Burns night.
My culture doesn't have Valentines day on Feb 14th, Chinese culture doesn't have Valentines day on Feb 14th, my wife gets nothing tomorrow, why should she. I mean, where is the romance in following something that is purely introduced to Chinese society because of the chocolate-mafia wanting to expand their business.
There are actually 3 valentines days. Well 4 if you include the one for men, but they never do.
The 2 you mentioned as well as the last day of spring festival.
I made a deal with my wife. Choose one of each and ill make them good but i get to completely forget and ignore the rest. So tomorrow is our valentines day. She doesnt want flowers because i buy them for her all the time and she hates that they charge more. Her birthday by our calender. Not the chinese one. And the day of our wedding cerimony. Not the book day and not the day we started dating. Its fair i think.
Tommorow ill take her shopping and for a nice dinner.
ScotsAlan:
The last day of spring festival? Not heard of that one Mike. Is that a haungbao day?
mike695ca:
Nope, no hongbao. Just a regular flowers and dinner day. It used to be more of a family day but as its 2 weeks to the day after spring festival most people are already back to where they work so the girls turned it into another Valentines day. Marketers ran with it. Most will admit its the least important of the 3 but they all know it and want shit. Btw next time your lady asks about all of these days ask her why she hasnt gotten you shit for white Valentines day. Oh yes. Its for men. March 14th every year.
I guess I'm lucky, my girlfriend doesn't want us to celebrate it in "the way of the consumer society", she doesn't want me to buy her a gift, she prefers a romantic moment together at no cost, like many Chinese she is extremely good at saving money, that's part of it I guess.
I might still take her to the restaurant though, there is a fancy Italian place that just opened nearby and I want to try it.
My wife doesn't care about celebrating anything. So, we pretty much don't... lol
Scandinavian:
Surely there must be a hint of Saint Patty's day celebration for the green giant !

I am very, very tempted to go from "double: to ZERO. call me Grinch.
Not like me, to be Grinch, but enough is enough dammit.
I fancy English 'short&concise' Valentine's:
Roses are red
Champagne is bubbly
Have a wonderful day
I'll be at the rugby.
I just read:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
The batteries I've got
are better than you.
Shining_brow:
Actually, it was a friend posting on Wechat :p It's all good... :)
