Q: Why do 'Hutongs' have such a prominent place in Chinese culture?

I would think they are similar to older residential areas in most countries, in as much that they need to be preserved for historical reasons.

China (and specifically Beijing) is probably changing faster than any country/city in the world. Growth means new structures, buildings and unavoidably a new identity.
Beijingers have a deep sense of pride regarding Beijing and probably identify Hutong as the ''old/traditional Beijing''.
