Q: Why do i need a marriage visa ?
My wife is Chinese and we have a one year old daughter together. I currently have a Z type working visa but one of my friends suggested that I should apply for a marriage visa. I am not clear on how useful a marriage visa is, I was told that you cannot work on marriage visa or maybe I just misheard. Can anyone please explain the advantages of having a marriage visa and any experiences of obtaining the visa.

If you are an expat, you dont need one and getting one would probably be detrimental. If you are retired or just not working, a marriage visa is much more convenient than a tourist visa.
I don't know much about it and I'm sure the married guys here can give you a better answer but yeah, as I understand it you aren't supposed to work on the marriage visa so if you lived in a place where they get anal about that it probably isn't worth having.
You also need to renew then every year (or two years in Robrock's case - see his thread here) the same as a normal z visa so unless you don't plan on working I don't see the point.
I have to have a marriage visa because I cant get a work visa,but I also think that its a lot safer than working on a business visa.
when these 2 years are up I will have been married 5 years,so according to what I have read online I should be able to get a green card because Iam married and have a family.

Unfortunately Rob it's not as simple as that. 5 years of marriage is the basic starting point....then there are requirements for stable accommodation, stable (legal) income (with requirements for earnings and having paid taxes). I'd suggest a bit more research before you pin your hopes on the fabled D-visa! They're still as rare as rocking horse shit but the requirements are getting easier.
@Engleteachted. Rob is referring to the so-called "permanent resident card" which has nothing to do with giving up citizenship. I can't think of any on this forum who'd be stupid enough to want to do that, even if it was possible to get Chinese citizenship.

Hotwater is right, to qualify for a D-visa, apart from being married to a Chinese national for 5 years you also need to have a house on your name and you need to show proof of income from legit work and paying taxes for the past 5 years.
Just get a BA degree already...

As mentioned above, you can't legally work on a marriage visa. So stick with your work permit/resident permit (what you refer to as your Z-visa)
The Q visa is only for visiting family. But I support anyone who uses it to support their family by working with it.
