Q: why do most people here seem to think they know it all??

Because compared to you, we really do. I'm sorry that the truth hurts. Maybe you can go get unbrainwashed? The truth is out there... keep climbing the wall.
I actually know a lot. Ask me anything. Between me and a friend of mine I'll bet you all questions you can possible ask can be answered sensibly. My friend is indisposed so make that 75% of all your questions.

Oh, and our school books had pictures in. That helped to keep our interest up .
Not as many good pictures as Hustler Magazine though. Now that really keeps my interest up

* can speak to some extent in several languages
* have a job related to knowledge and/or education
So yeah, don't expect conspiracy theories to flourish here, expect questions and critical debates.

She stood in front, arms crossed, staring at me saying I could not get home alone.

"No" She said. " I don't want to go to those places".
Yeah right. I managed to get home from all of them. Indeed, some were my home for a while.
I'm not sure why so many Chinese think we are so stupid as to not be able to get home. We got here after all .

I have observed this forum for over two years and see a trend that veteran posters with over 800 posts or more seem to think they are entitled by seniority to be right on target about every subject. If they cannot successfully defend their positions on a particular position they resort to ridiculing and down-voting, as 10 year-old kids would do.
This should be a safe place for a healthy debate where learning something new is more important than just "winning" your argument at any cost. Now within an hour, this post will probably have 4-5 down votes simply because I made an objective statement after being active on this forum for only 3 days.
As I pointed out in another post, the average stay of a newcomer here is only about 7-10 days before they get fed up of the self-righteous "holier than thou" attitude or get banned after losers of arguments gang up on someone to the mods with phoney abuse reports, as happened to my flatmate about two months ago. Of all the expat forums in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, ECC has the highest turnover rate of users. Less than ten vets here are respectful, kind, and gracious to others even when they disagree. The rest are rude pigs to be honest. If everyone was like Sorrel, Crimo, ScotsAlan, and Shiningbrow, this forum could be the best in Asia. Why shouldn't we be able to talk and debate about any subject here, and if you don't like a topic, avoid it and find another that suits you? Is it so fricking difficult to agree to disagree? Sorry, but you asked.

Sorry man, this one I have to disagree with you. If you have been watching this forum for so long as you said, then you would have noticed that those who came in here with abuse would be met with equal abuse. Look at how many anonymous posters posting baiting questions hoping to start a fight between registered users. And, as you rightly pointed out, many of us still help out although we tend not to reply to anonymous ones. We have people verbally abusing some of us who genuinely want to help. Did you miss that as well? I mean why would one hide oneself when posting a question ? Unless of course he or she knows that it will draw a lot of flak, right? Recently, you would have seen certain posters hurling vulgarities, abuse and name calling nonsense, or did these posts escaped you? You know what, I don't know everyone one here personally but I think they are all great guys and if I met them in person I don't think I will feel differently. Yes, sometimes we disagree and it leads to some elbowing but haven't you done that with real life friends? I don't know about your friend being banned here but perhaps he may have posted some nasty remarks? I'm just guessing but banning is done by the admin people, so it must have been really nasty.

But when you start spouting things that don't make any sense, have horribly incorrect terminology, and things you never bothered to research for yourself (Kylin processor, conspiracy theories with multiple contradictions and bad terminology, etc), I take offense to it.
You're free to disagree, but you didn't address any of my points. You also started in with a condescending tone before most of us did, and with implied insults. That's when I stop being Mr. Nice Guy and turn green.
You want a nice discussion? Just discuss the points... and stop getting mad at people for disagreeing with you. Also, do your homework. If I hear "Linksys Simulator" one more time, I'm gonna jump off a bridge.

How many time seniority have been brought in a conversation ? I never seen anybody saying "I post here since years so I'm right". Also, if you tell me that the sky is orange, yes, I will post that this is no correct, it's blue. It's not to win an argument, it's merely debating. And even if you best buddy who worked for the NASA said the sky is orange, sky is blue.

Actually Dr Monkey, the sky is black, but the way the atmosphere filters the sunlight makes it seem like it is blue as the other colors of the spectrum are filtered off. Did you also know that, despite being able to see blue skies for millennia, most languages developed without a word for "blue" or the word for "blue" came very late in language development.

@scan <nerd mode on> Yeah, several Asian language use a common term for blue and green. In Vietnamese, it's "mau xanh" for instance. Some language have no word for blue, they put it as one shade of green (I think of a group of Papouasian people). We have an eye receptor for the blue, but it s far less sensitive than the one for green, so that makes sense. Sky color, it's the average light spectrum at a given altitude when you look the sky. Not black... The dominant effect is sun light scattered by air, which keeps blue as dominant in the spectrum.<nerd mode off>

What the heck? There's no word for blue in a lot of languages? How the heck? Is it color blindness? I've never heard of this. Blue and green are extremely different colors to me.

This is actually a funny question in a forum about "Land of the unsolicited advice" aka "Middle Kingdom"
I haven't found this with people on this site, but it does some to hold true with many people in this country and elsewhere in east Asia, it's due to arrogance and the idiotic "face" thing and perhaps xenophobic mindset. Or maybe just arrogance.
