Apparently it comes from '牛仔' Niúzǎi , which means cowboy in english.
Due to a lot of wild west themed movies of the 60s and 70sand their badass clint eastwood like heroes, the term 牛 became synomynous with cool or impressive  ..
My chinese friend told me this.

Some expressions in every language just cannot be translated literally . Why do English speakers use the word "dope" (drug) to express coolness and impression?

This.... there's some things you can never explain in any language.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
