They think that since you drink it and dont keel over dead , foaming at the mouth with and interrupted digestion and ruptured stomach that you must indeed  be strong.

I get that for drinking anything cold: water, soda, beer, etc.

The funny thing is, when they tell me that as they are eating ice cream....

While eating ice cream? Lol. You wouldn't understand. This is China, and we have five thousand years of history, in addition to unique bodies.

they are unique in the sense that the "logic gene" has gone missing

I suppose no one would say you are strong when you have a bottle of cold water in Summer? We have cold or iced water and eat ice creams in Summer, too.
If it is in winter, I tend to think they are saying you are strong to resist coldness of the weather. As drinking cold water could cause a loss of your body heat (is this the correct word?).
From a girl's view, I don't care if guys drink cold water. If a girl drinks cold iced water or eat an ice cream in winter, i would be amazed a little but still cool. As a girl I was told not to eat cold food or drink cold water in every month's special days as cold things would bring unpleasant heavy (physically) feelings and cause period disorders. And this is true in my case from experience. As a result I tend to avoid cold things in general.
Besides, what's so bad if they are saying you are strong rather than you are weak?

It's subtle Chinese for "I think you're an idiot, but I don't want to say."

Hugh.G.Rection:

No reason beyond that at all that I've come across. When I hear that phrase it is often followed by words to the effect "don't you know it's bad for you?". Which just reinforces my belief that many Chinese view people who drink cold water as stupid.

Now, historically there may be a reason for that, after all if you've boiled the water the bacterial pollutants are removed. But I still cannot get round their sticking to it with filtered and bottled water.

Back  home in Puerto Rico, there are people who believe that drinking cold beverages during or soon after eating will "cortar la digestion" (literally cut or interrupt digestion).

they believe from chinese traditional medicine that if you drink cold, your stomach over works to warm up the cold drink and makes other parts of the body weaker to fight infections and thus you will have stomach aches and mess up the balance of your body, everything should be in harmony in regard to the organs in your body.

this is an explanation from friends but i tell them drinking cold dr. pepper for 40 years must have killed me already and they are talking to my zombie twin. what i would like to know is why i can wear a t shirt and shorts in 15 c weather and they walk around wrapped up like a zombie.

...because they don't know any better. They listen to their parents and would never question them.

Mind boggling.

That belief is in the Chinese psyche/culture and thus they drink warm beer.

Drinking cold water is bad for you, so they say: "bad for health'.

And so is A/C:  cold wind blowing on you, 'bad for health'.
