Q: Why do people take really bad teaching jobs

-I saw one that charges teacher apartment rent of 1000rmb for a month in Jilin
-Another that forces you to work 'office' hours so 40 hour weeks for 5000 a month
-Another that pays 4000 for 26 hours a week
Who with ANY experience takes theses jobs? Are they for fresh people? Or non native speakers? And why do recruiters not even bother to read my CV? It's not making me like you...

People taking bad jobs and people offering bad jobs are 2 different things.

When I came here, I had no idea what to expect, and really came here because I felt my options were limited.  The job I ended up with was neither ideal nor horrible.  Next time (if there is one), I have a much better idea what to expect and what to look for.

Compared to jobs back home, you'd expect to pay for your own living space or to work 40 hours, and before I came here I'd think those would be reasonable.  Now, I kind of think they're ridiculous.

nevermind:

Screw that man, I don't teach English, but my first job here tried to scam me into pay WAY too much for their cruddy apartment next to the office in BF nowhere beijing.

That question is debatable. If the person does not have experience they have to get the experience and to work those type of jobs. If they are choosing a low paying job such as that it could be that they just enjoy working there and the pay does not matter. Some people live paycheck to paycheck. Others do not! Which one are you?

I think the actual question should be how do students stomach 'really bad' classes or poorly prepared classes? Plus, they actually don't do anything about it.

mattaya:

I see what you are saying: " It works both ways"! Got ya! And your exactly right so I'll give you a thumbs up!

Yeah, it's a scam... just as calling yourself a 'teacher' is a scam!

Look at it this way - local teachers had to study longer, get their degrees, before they could get their job - AND they're paid less!!! And they also have to pay for their accommodation (in many cases).

Whose ripping off who??

There will always be scams while there are people too stupid - or too desperate - to go elsewhere.

Which brings me to another point, which was touched on before... you can work 40hrs at McD, getting minimum wage, to go to your apartment which will cost far too much, and just eek by...or, come to China, get a low (but, relatively good) pay, with accommodation, work for only 15 hours per week, and live it up... which would you do?

If you've got the training and experience - it's obvious that you should get paid more (contrary to that other thread where I got voted down for suggesting it!) Well. at least in a civilised world!! The last place I worked would only increase my pay by a couple of hundred yuan, AFTER I had completed my Masters and done my CELTA and had a couple years experience under my belt... so, only about 500 difference between me and all my training and quals - and a fresh face off the boat with nothing!!! BAH! BS!!!

The first full-time teaching job I took here was for 3000 yuan a month, plus accomodation, for a 20 hour week. I took it because I had no qualifications and I was grateful for the job.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
