Q: Why do retail stores hold choreographed dances in the street?
Ive seen it many times, hair salons, cell phone shops ect. This morning I saw a tire repair shop with like 20 dudes dancing in a less than manly manner in perfect unison! I cant imagine how shaming people into synchronized homo-erotic poses can be classified as training or team building.... So what is it??
Team building, sales, marketing, advertising.
I notice in Nanning many groups of people of all ages (although mainly women) do this for recreation not at the bequest of their employers. You will see loads of people doing their version of 'line dancing'. My wife and I call it 'granny dancing' although frequently it isn't just older women.
Between the clappers (damn they wake me up at 8am on the weekends) and the blaring techno pop music in store fronts it is obvious they are just looking for an edge and getting peoples attention.
These techniques turn me off big time as I am sure it is the case with most westerners but they would not be doing it unless it had some kind of positive effect at attracting customers.
Dare I say Chinese people in general have short attention spans?

I suppose it's like a creeping wave of advertising. When something new happens everyone notices, and so very soon lots of places copy. The more this new 'ploy' is used the more people become 'immune' to it and so all the time ever newer and more different ploys are invented.
As an example, think of the last time you walked down an average main street in your home city, how many billboards were there? How many do you remember? I would hazard a guess there were a few billboards but that you remember none of them.
Its not organized by any retail stores.. People do these on their own ..

no, im not talking about old people dancing in parks... im talking about all the employees in full uniforms doing a dance. maybe clapping and singing together. You cant expect me to believe that these workers are so joyously in love with their oil changing job that they sing in the street at 8:00 in the morning.

Have you seen the faces of these dancers? The leader is enthusiastic, the girls range from enthusiastic to bored and the boys look embarrassed.
I think it is the cheapest and most embarrassing form of advertisement. They call it a team spirit thing. I call it silly or amusing depending on how pretty the girls are.
