It could have something to do with the fact that Chinese children read books all the time, many with tiny print. Reading Chinese characters is a bigger strain on the eye anyway, so when combined with excessive study and extra-curricular courses, at a time when kids should by playing in the mud and acting like kids, here most of the youngsters are coerced into a world of study in their freetime. I would say that there are more people in China wearing glasses than anywhere else in the world, based on my own emperical observation.
Because Chinese characters are so small that they must strain their eyes to read. The Roman (English) alphabet only has 26 letters, so it's really easy to tell them apart without looking so hard. Written Chinese has thousands and thousands of characters, so Chinese eyes must work a lot harder to figure them out.
Has to be genes, human body adapts to all situations through the history & generations.
Just like the same way basically chinese "han" men dont have so much hair in face and also the resistance created through years for fermented rice "jius".
I am the only one wear glasses in my family.
My brother is smarter, went to better collage doesn't need glasses.
My sister, watched more TV, played more online game, doesn't need glasses either.
So weird!!!
Well, everyone stays a lot on PC these days...maybe not enough raw carrots?
haha. I was about to ask this question and thought to look it up first. In the elevator at my apartment this morning, when I stepped in and did a quick glance around every single person was wearing glasses. I do to, but for some reason this caught my attention. Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks up such stupid questions.
It probably has to do something with the pollution. I'm sure it has affected people in one way or another. That, plus the gamers that sit and play for a week without taking a shower, could also be why a certain percentage wears glasses. Oh, and don't forget those that will go to the bathroom and not wash their hands and afterwards decide to rub their own eyes.
Lack of vitamin A. this has been going on for generations so now it has become genetic. Franck3
It's genetics. Students here try to convince me it's because of all the work they do- but Chinese who grow up in America have poor eyesight as well, even the ones who aren't particularly dedicated students. When I recall this to my students, they are always absolutely shocked.
another answer is even the english books here are small font print size , with the lack of trees , lack of paper, print size is smaller than western countries, they print large font books for export and sell small font print english books for china. i have seen this in bookstores but i did not believe it, smaller print less use of paper
well, the reason for the males is excessive masturbation. not sure about females though,,,, could be....
Two giant reasons:
1) Flourescent light bulbs. They're indoors (school, etc) far too often, and these light bulbs are bad for your eyes.
2) Pollution blocks out the sun in most cities, so, like #1, most of them don't get enough sunshine for healthy eyesight.
I agree with some above, who say it might have to do with vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin A, but possibly also vitamin D. The best sources of vitamin A are not from veggies, where the vitamin A is not the right kind and has a poor conversion rate, but from animal sources, such as liver and dairy. However, I don't know if that is the actual cause, or just adds to the problem. I've read a few things that say a high carb diet, or a diet with a lot of sugar, can cause poor eyesight. Chinese eat a lot of rice, and quite a few sauces on their food have sugar. Add in the fact that they're now eating sugary candy and drinks, and it doesn't make it any better.
