Q: Why do so many Chinese people smear Western culture?

This is a counter question to the one posed by zengpingjiang. I already have an idea of what the Chinese users are going to say but I'd like to hear it anyway.

Because they don't understand it regardless of how you try to explain it. Also I have found that they don't really want to know. The bits they do pick up on, and which they love to quote back to you, are the negatives which are fed to them by the Chinese media.

Jealousy, inferiority complex, ignorance, the list goes on... Most Chinese don't smear the west as most want to go to the west, but the freaks smear the west...

Again many who try to put Western culture down probably do so though ignorance and miss information that has been force fed to them. Another reason would be the same that many people througout the world put others down. Due to their own insecurities they find it empowering to feel they are better than others by putting them down. Similarv to the way bullies act. But again to suggest that many or most Chinese try to put down Western culture is as big a generalisation as that which some posters on here make about Western peoples attitudes towards China and it's culture. Dont be swayed by the vocal minority into thinking in certain way. Most Chinese I have met are interested in how things are in my country and if it wasn't for the language barrier I am sure we would spend much time trying to understand the way things are and why they are different.

It's so completely different from their culture and they don't understand it. It doesn't help that most get their ideas of Western culture from TV shows and movies.

Well, I would argue the following : Foreigners may smear Chinese culture, because there is only one. However, it would difficult or a sign of stupidity, if some Chinese would say that they smear Western culture.

Contrary to Chinese culture, there isn't only one Western culture. French culture is as different from German culture as American culture is from Italian culture. For a Chinese to smear the various culture of not less than 20 countries, it means either she/he is of a rare intelligence to know all the different aspects and traditions of these cultures and being able to point out the reasons to smear this or that culture in particular (which I doubt to find someone that clever in a country that put all black faces in Africa and white faces in US), or she/he is of a rare arrogance, and that I would believe it.

Most do not and I find it is usually the men that do. I find that Chinese women are far more open to western culture and language.
I think it is like raging homophobic politicians in the US that turn out to be closet gays.
Maybe they smear western culture because they are jealous, or they are just too brainwashed by CCTV and other state media, that they just don't know any better.
Keeping people stupid and uninformed is a great tool of control....look at the US! Shock
I also think the whole idea of western countries that are made up of people from all over the world is also quite foreign to them.

Because most people have never been to other country... What they learn is mostly from tv, movie and the foreign teacher they only have... How can u make people understand if they never learn it right. Tell me, what did u think China is like before u came here.
Also China is huge, bigger than Europe, the lrgest population... Cantonese culture is different from north-east China's culture, Xin jiang, Tibet, etc. The so-called Chinese culture is just one of the great job the great party did.

They do because they always have. During waring states, they couldn't stop badmouthing all the neighbouring non-Chinese barbarians (and even some of the Chinese-speaking people who'd never been part of Zhou) at all times. That attitude continued right through to late imperial times, when the Chinese realized they were still in the dark ages, and the reformers started going off about "Western technology, eastern ethics." with the strong implications that we were still monkeys, just monkeys with lots of advanced technology? Typical 阿Q BS. They couldn't even come up with a plan to steal centuries worth of our technology, plus remodel their institutions after ours, without talking tons and tons of shit about us.

Anyway, after Zhongnanhai couldn't really pull of the "workers of the world" propaganda anymore, they just reverted to the old ways: We're the most civilized, we have the longest history, the world is so jealous of China: all the same old lines the Chinese have been hearing for twenty five hundred years, which are completely ingrained in the culture by now. Really, nothing new under the sun. If anything, the mainland has been getting more and more old fashion and Confucian in the last two or three decades, in more ways than just foreigner hating.

Of course, something similar happened in the west. The only reason westerners are slightly less bigoted was because the Romans, and westerners for centuries thereafter, love the idea of the noble savage as a way to criticize our own societies by comparison (look how ethical these barbarians are, why can't we do better?) (That logic goes from Tacitus to Benjamin Franklin talking about the Iroquois and later). The Romans taught the west it was ok to briefly swallow your pride for the sake of rhetoric.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
