Q: Why do some Chinese teas cost several tens of thousands?

It's no joke: I've heard that some teas cost cost several tens of thousands here. Even in regular tea shops you can buy tea that costs over 1000 kuai per 100g. What makes these teas so expensive?

The tea bubble.  Just like once upon a time four hundred years ago tulip bulbs were so, so expensive.  It's just another financial game.  And it's true what you write, however, that there are some dreadfully expensive teas out there.

See http://www.teaencyclopedia.org/jin-jun-mei.html

In my opinion, this is a very good tea. Not something I would pay for, but it sure beats a 50kuai pack normal tea.

If you see a tea in a teashop that is 1000 per 100g, then be sure you can get the same tea at half that price if the teashop owner was your best friend.

It is not different than anything else, red wine can go very high up in price, the expensive ones could be better, maybe a BMW is better than a Toyota etc....

I think of the orient as the origins of tea and was surprised to see how expensive tea can be. I brought Tetly tea from home, not because of the cheap price, but because I like it better than anything I've had in the land of tea. $7 for 216 bags.
