Look beautiful...tastes terrible.
tomatoes aren't much better. A mushy tasteless purée!
That's because your buying the cheap kind under 20 kuai. The good one's are over 35 kuai. You get what you pay for!!
Like everywhere most strawberries look OK but have little taste. Most fruit is disappointing in taste compared to what it used to be and that does not change whether in China or Australia from my observation.
Flavor bears no relationship what so ever with cost. I pick my strawberries directly from a farm maybe 20 Kms away, and I do pay 5 to 8 Rmb per kilo taken, depending on market fluctuations and weather conditions.
It has been my observation that most employees at the farm do pick strawberries which are beginning to turn red, so they will not be as sweet as others when at the market place. I do look for the ones that are totally red, those that ripen on the plant do taste a lot better. Each season I get in different trips as much as 10 to 12 kilos, freeze some for later use, make wine with some, and use the rest for different dessert purposes.

Can I come over to your house for dinner sometime? Every time you talk about food, I'm envious.

Jnusb, I will be honored to have you as my dinning guest. Anytime you are near Nanning. Guangxi Province, send me a PM, and I will give you my phone. But I must warn you, I do not cook by recipees, I start mixing and tasting, and when I like it I stop adding. As a result, no two dishes will taste exactly the same. Tonight I made a soup famous in Galicia, Spain, Chick peas, potatoes, celery and some coliflower, and of course some "chorizo" (spaniard sausage). With garlic bread, and a bottle of Mouton Cadet red dry wine, it was a very satisfactory dinner. Tomorrow I will make a dessert called "torrejas". Take stale French bread, cut it in slices, dip in a mixture of milk, vanila and add sugar to taste, then in another plate where you previously beaten a whole egg, also dip it and into a frying pan with very little olive oil and fry both sides without burning it. Out into a serving dish, and pour a previously done syrup consisting of sugar, a little water and anissete. refrigerate for 4 hours and it is a sweet version of French toast from Spain.

Good choice my mom always loved that one. You know they say that the Mexicans came up with Tres leches cake from that recipe. If you want I have a good recipe for it
sort of funny.
