Q: Why do you come to China?

For work?

For study?

For Chinese food?

or for the one you love?

I'd like to hear your story...

I got a job in China for the same reason a lot of people do, I wanted to travel, see a new country, experience a different culture and do something interesting in my life.

I wasn't looking for a job in China specifically, I also applied for jobs in South Korea and Vietnam and was lucky enough to get one of the jobs I really liked the look of. It happened to be in China.

LydiaZeng:

Congratulations!

Wish you have a good time in china!

I want to know what is your job?

My work place offered me a big fat bonus every month if I worked for 9 months in China (on top of my existing salary)

I can travel around Asia while i am out in China.

NOTE TO OP

if the only reason you are on this site is to improve your English, be prepared to enter into dialog with other posters and not have the communication all one way - i.e. you asking all the questions and not responding when asked questions in return, and also giving an opinion of your own in your comments.

Also be prepared to read some answers you might not like, because this forum is not the land of flowers where all is harmonious with kittens and puppies for all.

I am tired of people thinking it is ok to ask question after question and give nothing, in terms of conversation, in return.

Peace.

LydiaZeng:

Thank you for your advice!

Meanwhile, I will be careful about the bad guys.

Probably because I'm a masochist.

LydiaZeng:

Why did you say that?

Does it make you difficult to living in China?

6 years 39 weeks ago

Zethe:

Yes, life can be VERY difficult here because the way people do things here creates problems everywhere.
For example: Companies not paying on time or the proper amount, or even at all..and they have to create a huge battle for every small detail.

My post was more a joke, though...since I just tolerate the terrible behavior for the money.

I agree with you.

In fact, I also think that sometimes Chinese people care too much, especially about money.

If you are working in a legitimate company, things will be much better.

Zethe:

I have always worked in legitimate companies.
That changes nothing except that SAFEA can help get your money back.
It doesn't change the mainland's work culture of lying, stealing, being terrible at managing or planning, and to renege on promises.
Don't make me laugh, my wife is Chinese and there's a reason she NEVER works at a Chinese company (except private work), it's because they are all thieves and idiots playing idiotic mind games for peanuts while never having a real plan or management in mind.

Initially to get married. No kidding. Got married and the Canadian government wouldn't let her into Canada. 2 years later I started teaching ESL. I enjoyed it a lot more than my last career (Accounting as a CMA). This was my fourth career and gave me an opportunity to see China. The pay was a lot less, but I liked the work week. I could also learn about China from Chinese people. China's a big country and more diverse than meets the eye. I don't have to say much there because most of you have been here a long time. My wife eventually got into Canada.wink

I came here to explore the other side of the world as I am from Canada. I came for a job teaching English and met a girl. Fast foward to today and I travel back and forth from Canada to China because I have a place here and my wife runs her business in China. I work online so it doesn't really matter where I live... but I can't really stay in China too long because it slowly drives me mad. That's when I go back to Canada for a while to recharge my batteries.

LydiaZeng:

It seems you also have a hard time to living in China.

I think you are a good husband as you stay here still for your wife.

Can you tell us the reason why you think living in China drives you mad?

6 years 39 weeks ago

Robk:

The reasons are too many... China just isn't a good place for a foreigner to stay in for too long. Simple tasks become very difficult for foreigners in China because China doesn't really accomodate foreigners.

not that many foreigners actually live here.

Reasons why people stay here are always the same...

Money, women or travel. <- in that order the people also leave earlier

there is literally no other reason why any sane human being wants to live here other than collecting money or he/she found his/her love

Robk:

I have to agree with dom... after a while there is REALLY no sane reason for anyone with an ounce of amition/wanting a better life for themselfes or their family to stay in China long-term or live here permanently.

Money, love and travel will all eventually fade away. If you are a thinking person, you will come to the same conclusion... it is envitable.

Lydia Zhang is curious why foreigners don't like China and stay here. I will write some simple examples:

1- My mother in law buys some fruits and shopkeeper asks where we are from. She says "we are from Guangzhou " . Then, the shopkeeper asks about me. What about him? She says " he is foreigner " shopkeeper says " laowai" right ? 3 times with an angry attitude because he saw that my wife is pregnant . Why do we need to explain it to shopkeeper ?

2-Food in China sucks. Basically , they throw some vegetables into a pan , and add some oil . After that they just cook and add some soy souce. That is it ! Excellent food of the universe !

3- Public toilets suck. It is very disgusting . There is a pee pool in every wc. I need to cover my mouth and nose everytime and keep my breath for a minute not to throw up.

4- Some people clearly don't take enough showers and they stink. Public busses sucks big time!

5- So many people clear their throat and spit disgustingly in public.

6-Chinese guys are really jealous of foreign guys and they hate foreign guys when they see them with a Chinese girl. If they see Chinese guy with a foreign girl , they are so happy.

7- You walk on the street and nobody is smiling. It is like somebody took their souls.

8-Pollution and dust

9- I can't walk near rubbish bins . They stink like rotten rat especially in summer.

10- Chou tofu is really disgusting . Who can eat something which smells like poop?

11-Dog cruelty festival ! Cooking dogs while they are alive !! Seriously what is wrong with you ?

12- Jealous Chinese colleagues which can't tolerate that foreigners make more than them .

We just tolerate every nonsense and inhumanity for money for couple of years.

LastTargarean:

Get ready to be harmonized. Truth is unwelcome. You ahould just go on a crazy right-wing rant if you expect comments to remain. Mention truth about the percentage of the population actively employed in agriculture or make a reference to a hilarious film and see your truth/wit disappear.

LydiaZeng:

these are too bad.

I admit some Chinese have many bad habits.

Probably because our Diathesis Education has been carried out for decades. China is still a developing country. We still have a long way to go.

But about foods, I totally disagree with you.  We have a lot of cooking methods. Not just soy sauce. The cuisine and taste vary from place to place.

I love Chinese food!

nicholasba:

1- Chinese have that retared habit to state the obvius and yeah, in some way the xenofobic

2-thats true because china has no law or standard whatover and many people cook while they should instead scrab toilettes. Chinese, most of them cant even cook.

5- culture.

6-many of them

7-nah

8-yep

9- yeah, thast says a lot about the yummi chinese food they cook.

10- again i think in taiwan or hk, food is better

Samm11:

1- try bigger cities and/or shopping in a supermarket

2- matter of taste

3- not everywhere. besides, your mouth is the last thing you need in a toilet ;-) .

4- In the north, maybe. In the south they are shower freaks, some take it like 3 times a day.

5- Old generation only, but yeah it's not nice.

6- clearly not all of them. simply avoid those people. if your "friends" treat you that way, change friends.

7- try smiling to them first. i guarantee that 90% of Chinese smile back.

8- flee south.

9- don't. especially in summer.

10- matter of taste again.

11- pretty sure it will be banned in a couple of years. and if it bothers you that much you can add to it by doing something rather than just complaining. like those people who stopped the truck with dogs coming from gansu to guangxi and bought the dogs out.

12- avoid those colleagues: "hi"-"bye" and that's it, you are not forced to marry them .

all in all, there are many things in China to hate and Chinese people can be unfair to foreigners, but I can't disagree with what they often say: "If you don't like it here, come back home". Harsh, but nobody forces you to be here. If your reasons to stay overcome things you hate, all you can do is try to be positive, for your own good.
