Is it political? Do you want to help? Do you post got the craic?
I post for the craic. How about you?
That question actually got me thinking. It took a while to find an answer.
I don't post for the politics, I don't a shit about politics, and I don't post for the help, I look after myself ok.
I suppose it's for the craic, and maybe to get stuff off my chest like Rob said.
Mostly though I think it's because I'm - sort of at least- chatting and listening to other people who are mostly old China hands like myself so I can relate to people here.
It reminds me of when I'm in a bar or restaurant and get talking to guys I've 'sort of' known for years because they're been here long enough that we've met and got drunk together before, been to the same parties and know a lot of the same people.
Some are idiots, some are really interesting, some I agree with and some I don't but because I've known them and drunk beers with them for years I still enjoy their company.
You can talk about China and the weird experiences you have here to your best friends and family back home and nobody will really understand what you're saying or probably even care but people who live here do know what you're talking about.
As far as websites go, ECC feels comfortable and familiar to me.

Is 'craic' pronounced 'crack' in proper Iro?
I'm working on me raincoats, mostly. I hope, that isn't deemed political....

I didn't know the right spelling. Phonetically, I was good .
hmmmm,,,, guess to get a type of interaction with other gringos. I've been fkn off in E/SE Asia maybe close to 12 years now with next to no interaction with laowei, so, it's interesting and feels like I know people when I come on here,,, people who have a similar cultural reference place as I. also, I'm not into TV, read less than I should, and somehow turned to this internet thing and have since kinda gotten a bit addicted I would say. I read / check certain websites just about every evening and echinacities is one of them.

I find it's such a thrill, when they flame me against their will.
(now that song is stuck in my head)
When i first came here i was looking for answers and there was a healthy population here
the quality of posts were good and the admin did a great job .
Now i come here to waste some time .
there only seems to be a few visitors to the site and imo use the seach mode to see if there is a answer to their questions rather than have to ask it .
the site seems to be more focused on world events rather than China telated topics. so IMO that makes its original platform mute.
it is more like a Facebook page these days with the same people with the same views.
I am finding i have more time for Viki than expats as anoying as she can be sometimes.
So the site click meter is still going it is just that people use the information already available.
ScotsAlan:
The forum format seems to be on its way out. Instant messaging seems to be taking its place. I checked a few Scottish and Sports forums I follow (I don't post on them), and most have comments similar to yours. Its a shame really. Because forums are a good place for people to have a battle. Instant messaging groups tend to be exclusive. Like minded people and all that. Open forums are good because of differences of opinion.

one good thing about this site is if something goes wrong we can get the word out pretty quickly ,like when Qantas stopped flying a couple of years ago .or an earthquake or other natural disasters
To help those in genuine need and take the piss out of those who deserve it.
It can be a laugh, and I can share some experiences.
I use the site, for many reasons, when i'm after a bit of advice, give advice if i've had the same problem and solved it.But also for fun, time wasting and the job board. All in all,I think it's a pretty good site,

Ok, I hate to be a 'tard here, but what in hell's bells is 'craic' ?
Hotwater:
Well I never! Turns out the Irish appropriated the term & gaelicised the spelling! It's actually a Northern English/Scottish word originally!
never knew that till today!
ScotsAlan:
You should know by now that the Scottish have invented almost everything.
Shining_brow:
The Scots invented China! (no, not the crockery... although with a word like 'crockery', probably that too! :p)
