That's not all places I believe it's more open in places like Shanghai. I could see where you are coming from though. It's not 100% recognized and some people I know that tried to get married in the capital city were denied. I read the article!

I am not a sociologist nor anthropologist but I would guess that tradition and the one child policy are the main culprits. Ignorance too.

I  have been told repeatedly, by university students and middle aged businessmen, that there were no gay people in China until foreigners "brought" them here.

Just like good old Iran which is also 100% heterosexual (number not adjustet for what goat-herders do in their tea breaks)

ignorance is bliss, ask them how many are left handed , same response.

Hugh.G.Rection:

Interesting you should mention left handed, I've been here 2 1/2 years and I saw my first left-handed Chinese person last week at his birthday party, (he was 5 or 6). I commented on it as my daughter is showing some signs of left-handedness and I had noted how rare this appeared to be in China.

they force them to write characters with the right hand and experts say that 9 percent of all people are born left handed as a genetic trait, but chinese are exempt from this scientific principal. when nobody in my class says their left handed, i wonder if they remember being left handed before primary school beats it out of them.

SARCASM ON

Because most of the men are gay. Think about it

-Carry bags

-Spend a fortune on clothes and poof haircuts

-Think girls are gross

-Hang out with other men

-Listen to Justin Beiber

-SARCASM OFF

There's probably numerous reasons, but one theory I've heard is that they adapted homophobia as a social policy in order to more fully conform to "Western" ideals, iirc during the Qing dynasty. This is evidenced by the fact that there were numerous openly gay Chinese historical figures, especially poets and artists, up until the 19th century or thereabouts. Of course, this is not part of Chinese compulsory education. Interestingly, monogamy is a similar phenomena - the concept wasn't widely practiced in China until relatively modern times, and they still have significant trouble following it!

(I'm no historian, so correct me if I'm wrong about any of these things.)

Hugh.G.Rection:

The legal monogamy is correct at least. My wife's grandfather had three (legal) wives at the same time. I've been here 2 1/2 years and been to 8 family weddings and 'we've' got hundreds of cousins I still haven't met.

True story....

Conversation 1.

Me and BF to Chinese friend, X: "Do you have a partner?"

Colleague: "oh, well you see, I'm gay."

US: "Yes, we figured that one out quickly. You can still have a partner!"

Him: "Um, no."

Two weeks later, me and BF with a bunch of Chinese.

Chinese female friends: "we should find a girlfriend for X, don't you think so?

Me: "Don't think he'd be interested. He's gay. We could try to find him a boyfriend, though."

Them: "NO HE IS NOT!!!"

Me: Yes, he is. He told us so."

Them: "NO, NO, NO HE ISN'T. He's just a little... um.... (one pulls out an electronic translator) quirky and, um (more translating)... alternative. We should find him a girlfriend."

Me:.... "if you say so. Good luck with that."

The guy was no closet case either, it was no secret, they just wouldn't listen.

Traveler:

Up until 2007, homosexuality was classified as a mental illness. It was the IOC that forced the change through. After the games, the government seemed to reverse their tolerance toward it.

There are no gay men in China. They are all too lazy to get off their a**es long enough to be gay.

crimochina:

they do not need to get off their asses they simply sit in each others lap and "get up" to "get off".

I am a fake girl-friend to a gay Chinese guy: he doesn't want to upset his mother while he is still in China - he is planning to leave soon.

I also know his foreign partner. all this involves is a photo of my face for his wallet.

it makes his time with his family easier as it is sad to see him so unhappy after visiting them

Because China hasn't degenerated like the decaying Western cultures who did let the poison of left-wing atheistic 'back to Rome' movements infiltrate their version of Communism (which they are leaving anyways).

And because they don't allow pornography to weaken their population.

just because steve is allowed to be gay and have his husband does not mean i'm gonna give up P*. the thought of homosexuality makes me wanna vomit but that does not mean others should not be allowed to pork/ poke / prod whoever consents to being poked. as long as we are all adults.

what i do take offense to in the west, is homosexuality being forced on us in the movies and tv shows. there should be a HS warning at the beginning. tell me if there is going to homo stuff going on in the movie so i can decide not to watch it.

and porn has noothing to do with homosexuality (unless it's gay porn. or unless it is easy to see the guy does a lot of gay porn, keep your ass off camera) how and why does people watching porn puck up a society. american society is pucked up, not because of porn. chinese society is pucked up, not because of porn. germany and the netherlands seem to be great, they have porn but it is not because of porn!!!!

Scandinavian:

You are perhaps confusing US with an open free society, but it is just as brainwashed as the rest of the world. US has to many influential religions nutters to truly allow the country to flourish.

The idea that porn, and human sexuality, should be looked upon as a bad thing only comes from the last centuries of religious nuttery

going to interesting to watch as america becomes more secular and allows gay marriage and russia, china and most of africa fight this new idea like a war on morals, ring side seats are going to be expensive.

crimochina:

europeans learned a long time ago to not allow churches to influence their countries. usa didn't have all the  history of religious wars that that europeans experienced but hopefully the younger generations will rescue us from the gripes of the religious zealots.

JayKnox:

Crimo,

Europe is plenty religious. Not that there is a single country called 'Europe' but there is still a Christian majority which has flat-lined in some countries and is growing in others.

There is no history of 'religious oppression' but Europe is certainly experiencing a lot of pressure from the 'politically correct' atheistic liberals that seem to have some kind of monopoly all over the place.

The good news - 'Christian Parties' (like in Scandinavia) or Politicians like Gert Wilders, The 'BNP' in the UK and others have been making great gains and are rising around Europe.

All of these political parties adhere to Christian foundations and ethnics (even tho, many member may not be Christians themselves) so this means they won't be killing homosexuals as much as keeping homosexuality from affecting normal people or being promoted.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
