Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: Why does China spend more money policing it's own people than on national defense?
What is the CCP so afraid of?
Because it has made enemies of its own people, it has more enemies inside China than outside.
Judging by the level of corruption that's already in the open, I am not surprised that they do so. I mean, look at the obscene amounts being embezzled, from railways to logistics. Billions have been recovered, so the amount spent is worthwhile.
Yeh ~ I agree with Samsara, but would like to add; in any dictatorship 'CONTROL' is the ultimate aim & usually, as in China they have control over all matters e,g. mass media etc.
What I don't understand is..we all know one of the worst problems in Chinese cities (esp Beijing!) is the traffic jams
. Now why isnt the Govt deploying heaps of cops on motorbikes thru out to monitor these idiot/selfish drivers??
Cos they are the ones causing the jams, breaking all traffic laws known to civilised lands!
I, sorry, dont just get it.
This govt. can control anything they want in China, but they wont do such a simple thing to help us all...WHY?
Scandinavian:
this May1-2 holiday, Zhuhai was teaming with traffic police. All standing around doing jack. Probably their presence in some cases just added more vehicles to the crowded streets.
Vyborg:
To not control traffic is to make people waste time, money and energy and get them irritated with each other.
Wasting money boosts the economy. Wasting time tires people and tired people sleep earlier (they have to get up earlier as well, of course). Irritations make people drink more, another boost for the economy, and divide them. Divided people are easy to rule.
So the government is killing several birds with one stone by not organizing or controlling traffic. Their own cars are highest in the pecking order anyway so they won't have so much trouble getting through.
The security measures in subway and railway stations have a similar effect. Block the flow and sow distrust by making them believe it's for their own safety, and they will never be able to discern the real problem or be inclined to unite against you.
Because civil unrest is a real security threat to both the government and society in general. I cant think of one reason anyone would want to get into an armed conflict with China. There would be nothing to gain whatsoever. And the incidents of violence recently were internal.
they actually think they can control this large population, 43 cars per thousand citizens, compared to 800 per thousand in america, when the cars jam the streets so bad that they cant get to a demonstration or a protest, they will have to spend millions on helicopters to maintain a harmonious society, stick around, its gonna be a hell of a show.
Come on Hulk. No facts or figures to back up your claim?
America's budget. On only from wiki, but it's better than nothing:
Total outlays by agency (in billions of dollars):
AgencyDiscretionaryMandatoryTotal% of TotalDepartment of Defense including Overseas Contingency Operations6666.7672.917.7%Department of Health and Human Services including Medicare andMedicaid80.6860.3940.924.7%Department of Education67.74.271.91.9%Department of Veterans Affairs60.479.4139.73.7%Department of Housing and Urban Development41.15.246.31.2%Department of State and Other International Programs56.13.459.51.6%Department of Homeland Security54.90.555.41.5%Department of Energy35.6–0.635.00.9%Department of Justice23.912.736.51.0%
Look at how big the defense budget is compared to everything else. It's massive.
To defend against what? External enemies. Perhaps real, maybe imaginary. Maybe caused by foreign policy? I don't know. Maybe it's just to keep people in jobs. Make them feel patriotic and involved.
Last time I was in NY, there was no many Police everywhere I thought I there must have been a Police convention going on somewhere.
We need to keep things in perspective. Police here are low paid, so for less money than other countries pay, they can have more. Same goes for street cleaners, Government officials, bank tellers, security staff, whatever.
I have found the Police here to be ok. My daughter is often invited into the local police station for a glass of milk and a cookie .

Sorry, cut and paste went wrong.

etc
And I wouldn't trust them with my daughter... wtf?
ScotsAlan:
Goodness me. I always thought of myself as a square peg in a square hole.
But some of the right wing anti establishment stuff on here is making me feel like a tie dyed hipster hippy.
The Police are not all fire breathing demons you know. All Government workers are not horse mounted trumpet blowers from the Book of Revelations.
They are just ordinary people , doing ordinary jobs. Very few of them have a real chance of promotion, so they fill their time the best they can.
Anyway, what's wrong with my daughter drinking milk in the cop shop?
In the west that would be called community policing. I thought that was what most politicians had as number one on their manifesto when they are asking for your vote.
Hulk:
I know there's a lot of nice people working in the Chinese government.
But Beijing dictates what they are required to do. When they do things that go against their conscience, that is what makes them... assnuggets, I guess. I'm talking about violently suppressing minorities, forced abortion, forced sterility, etc.
My MIL was forcibly sterilized by the CCP. I almost never met my wife.
Hulk:
And there are too many pedophiles out there, even in China. I wouldn't dare to trust a stranger with my daughter, even if they're police.
ScotsAlan:
Every Government dictates what the CS does. That's why they are the CS.
Sorry about your MIL. But in realistic terms, that must have happened a few decades ago. Maybe it happened at the same time when the UK was forcefully sending b*st*rd Children to Australia. Go back to the 20's, and California was at the forefront of eugenics.
Peados? Yeah. They are everywhere. We had one in the street I grew up in. That was swept under the carpet. That was what happened in those days.
Do you really think I leave my kid alone in the cop shop? Of course not. She is never out of our sight.
Hulk:
It happened 21 years ago, not 30. They also paid her another visit to make sure her forced sterilization was still in place... two years ago.
The past doesn't excuse the present. It still goes on in China.
Anyway, I'm glad you don't let her out of your sight. Say... are you Hugh? You sound like Hugh. If so, welcome back.
ScotsAlan:
Yup Hulk. It still goes on.
But I think there is usually more to it than is admitted.
I'm not sure how it works, but there is some deal where couple can get tax breaks if they promise to get the snip after one baby. I suspect some people maybe sign, and then don't get the op. Some people carry on having babies without paying the fine.
Of course, I am not saying that's what went on in your case.
And, erm nope, I am not Hugh. I did know a few when I lived in Scotland though .
Because they know very well that enemy cannot attack them directly rather would come indirectly in shadows. They know F**kbook, youtube are used for specific purpose and can mislead the masses within no time. They came up with their own alternates which are unacceptable to the rouges... They call it suppression and so on... Just recall Libya, Syria, Ukraine, Unrest in Balochistan (Gawadar Port) Pakistan and Afghanistan... Split the masses and let them kill each other until the curry is left for you to wipe... To me what China is doing in this regard is exactly their need...
ScotsAlan:
Rouges?
That's the word. Rouge states, rogue religions. Anyone who does not agree with you.
What if, and this is just a "what if", what if the leaders of the PRC actually do care about their people and want to avoid another Syria or another Balkans starting here?
Remember Granpa Wen making his speech about not going back to the bad old days of the personality cult? I thought that was a class speech. He showed real power there.
China has a long way to go, that's for sure. But maybe they are just trying not to make the same mistakes the west has made.
thefidu881:
And rouge agencies polluting the environment of global world.
royceH:
And 'ol Grandpa Wen...how's he going for a quid these days? Did quite well, the old boy did. Got lucky.
ScotsAlan:
Lol Royce.
In the UK they would have employed him as an advisor on private sector wages, and justified it by saying they need the best.
Then he would have been given a public sector payoff and pension .
It's the same everywhere.
DrMonkey:
Are you saying that Youtube and Facebook are purposely used (or worse, even designed) for dividing people in those areas you mention ? I wonder what is the average Internet accessibility in Balochistan :p
You can see it like this : there's a mean of communication that can by-pass censorship or control of a power, so people used. It does not requires that the mean of communication was *designed* for this, it just allows it.
cuz the government think the people in china more danger

Welcome to eChinaCities, dude! Pull up a chair, sit back, have a coke and a smile, and prepare for a wild ride!
