A lot of people think I'm American. I think it is just a generalization that most white people here are from America.  To be fair its the same back home, a lot of people see an asian and assume they are Chinese (or Japanese etc).

Some people, maybe those who have had more contact with foreigners, guess that I'm European and some even guess right and guess English,  but the majority do make the random guess of American.

I love how people randomly thumbs down comments. Did I say something wrong? :S

Many think I am from Canada.  Had a blind date who apparently thought I was Canadian. When it turned out that I was American, she made an excuse and hurried away.

that was funny and surprising i think haha

Rarely do people ask me if I am American.  And if they do, and after I say I am Canadian, they seem happier...."oh...Canada...very cool".

Americans get a bad rap here.

Most of the time they just ask where I am from and I tell them to guess to have some fun.  I have had some very funny guesses.  Canada is usually one of the last picks.

derek:

That's true here too. I ask them to guess and they rhyme off 4 or 5 countries before they say Canada.

Considering all the media and who knows what else that pours in from America, I wouldn't be surprised that people just assume most expats are American and leave it at that. I've told my students that "Are you American?" is a bad question. I told them to ask "Where are you from?" instead.

philbravery:

I like that better  too

sorry  but being confused for being American is offensive to me

and I bet people from Canada would prefer it.aswell

I have a hard time telling the difference a lot of the time because I

don't have much to do on a daily basis with people from NTH America

No one's ever asked me if I'm American, ever. They just assume I am. My personal favourite is "You know there's a hotel/school nearby, a lot of Americans live there." Golly, thanks for the tip!

Those of you  who get pissed, well to be honest I dont blame you. No once wants to be confused with someone from another culture or country.

I tell my students the same as Jnus. It is more polite and people are not offended.

No, it's because america is famous for several reasons although some people don't want to admit it. First in Flight were the Wright Brothers without them we would still be sailing on boats to get around. And you the other inventions that were made there. We'd still have to run from door to door without the invention of the telephone. Heck you wouldn't even be typing on the internet if it wasn't for a brilliant mind from America. So yes people ask that question all the time! Lucky for me I get to say Yes I do!! And that' with a BIG !!

crimochina:

are you really that stupid???? first to invent something does not mean they were the only ones working on it? or the only ones close to figuring out how to do sth.

Wow, seems the American education system is pretty similar to China. You didnt invent everything, especially the internet. No one person invented the internet. and remember the internet and the world wide web are two different things. the WWW was invented by a brit, Tim Berners-Lee, granted he was in the States at the time but dont be Chinese and pretend that all the famous people in the world are from your country

Because to the Chinese it is the glorious middle kingdom and the rest - America pretty much being the rest.

They have spent their entire history telling themselves how wonderful they are.

Sometimes I have been asked when I am going home in my own country by strangers. I get confused and I don't realise what they are talking about. They think I am American. Once I work out what they are on about and tell them that I am from the same city as they are.

Should I let the Chinese think I am American or should I tell them that I am Irish?

GuilinRaf:

Tell them what you want. Have fun with it!
