Fen coins are the smallest unit of money here in China and they have been pretty much totally phased on in provinces like Jiangsu. The represent exactly NO VALUE AT ALL and even the one step up bigger denomination the jiao is still relatively useless.
So why are people still using them up here in the dongbei region?

Maybe because it is a poorer area and they are truely worth something. I live near Hangzhou and the Jiao is used a lot as you can buy some things with just one. The fen though is pretty much worthless.
I think only in big supermarket they use it. Do u see the price? 2.36, 7.28...
that is true in many cities in china is so commun to use fen coins but is maybe because there you can find products with less products than in Shanghai or some big cities so for them is still significant to use fen coins.
