Q: Why does Sina Weibo not get blocked?

People are exposing scandals involving government officials all the time so why is Weibo allowed to carry on, but facebook remains blocked after all these years?

I've heard that Weibo blogs get taken down all the time, depending on how sensitive and scathing the material is, but as far as not being blocked, it originates inside of China. Facebook is a "foriegn" site, and is blocked because people could meet and plot against the national government here. Double standard? Yep, but such is the nature of the web. Here are some links for other sites blocked (note: it changes all the time):

One of the reasons cited for the eventual downfall of the Soviet Union (and there were many) was because of the rise of the internet and the accessability of information. Of course, Soviet Russia was a completely different animal than China.

China, in many respects, has learned to adapt to changing global parameters in regards to information flow, but is still well behind the curve inso far as creative thought and open-market critiques are concerned.

rasklnik:

The internet had NOTHING to do with the fall of the soviet union. The soviet union fell in 1990. The main factors for the fall of the soviet union were the war in Afghanistan, the economic crisis, the leadership of Gorbichev and the fact people were aware of the better standard of living in the free west.

Because Sina Weibo lets the government snoops creep around freely. Other sites don't.

They are working on it. You'll notice state media loves to run stories where an innocent person became the victim of rampant rumours. First demonize it, then shuit it down.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
