Q: Why don't other subway/metros have flat fares?

Something that struck me when I was in Guangzhou was that each journey has it's own fare, as opposed to the flat 2 RMB fare of Beijing. I also here it's the same in Shanghai. Anyone know as to why this is?

I can tell you Shanghai charges a fare based on distance traveled (IE, not a flat fare like Beijing). I think Beijing subsidizes the price of the subway journeys to try and encourage more passengers on the subway in order to mitigate some of the awful automobile traffic congestion (and also reduce pollution emitted from all those cars). Just my theory.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do. I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system. -- Natalie363
