Q: "Why don't you just show him some respect?"

This was the question I was asked by my friend who was translating for me, as I'm trying to get a full record of all tax paid by my workplace to the tax department.. and the guy he is referring to is BSing all the way!

What's most ridiculous is that my friend knows it's BS, thinks they've never paid a mao in their lives to the tax dept, and that the stuff the guy is doing is just to get us out of the office!

So, I ask you all, how is this supposed to work? Someone is stealing my money (well, technically the tax dept's money), bare-faced lying about it all, and yet - I'M supposed to show some respect????

Tell them we have a saying in English: Respect is earned, not given. When we feel that someone is doing us wrong, we will not respect them.

There are other sayings as well that etiquette prevents us from repeating.

What they don't realize is that when saving face for an individual, the whole country loses face to the rest of the world.

Well, I am going to point out the obvious for everybody.....

Your employer needs to be with-holding/remitting your income tax to the authorised governmental body. If they are not doing so, get ready for an adverse impact in the future. So, if this is really happening as it sounds, I advise you to take whatever sound, logical, rational, reasonable steps are available to you- to include reporting the situation to the local police/tax office.

Like most govt.s, the PRC does not take kindly to tax cheats. By coming forward and reporting this malfeasance, you have placed yourself on the winning side at the end of the day...

Shining_brow:

Yeah, Gregory, well ahead of you there.... I got a statement printed of what they said they've paid in tax (with red stamp, and fake signature by financial officer). At least it will mean that, as far as I'm concerned, all taxes have been paid  - AND they've completely lied about it.

And, yes, I've already figured who to call... SAFEA will be the first, then the tax dept (in Beijing, just in case they've got a friend in the local).
