Q: Why is ice cream is not widely available in Shenzhen?
I live in the always warm/hot city of Shenzhen and there is a very limited choice of ice cream even in the Western supermarkets, but in my hometown of Toronto, there is always a wide selection of ice cream available even in the winter when it can be minus 20 degrees outside. Is ice cream not popular in China?
What do you consider a "limited" amount of ice cream? You have a wide, wide selection of ice cream in Shenzhen, in particular -- from the Baskin Robbins shops, to the Haagen Daas places, to all of the different kinds of ice cream located in the major and not-so-majo department stores.
I can think of two reasons
1. During the warmest months it is very difficult to eat an ice-cream, if you buy it in a supermarket it will melt before you can pay for it.
2. The locals generally think cold things are bad, also sugar is on many peoples no-no list.
As 981... says, there are places to get ice-cream, but I also find it far more difficult to get an ice cream in China than in Europe. And in many small shops I would never buy ice-cream as it has been molten then frozen over and over again because many shops puts their ice-cream freezers out in the sun.
frkn McD's sells Ice-Cream like mad !! not bad either... cheap too... yeah, I know it probably isn't ice-cream... but it tastes ok to me and about 100000000 others... lol
hi-end is available in SZ. longer u r there,, u will see... 40kuai a scoop.. lol

In North America, McDs milkshakes are made from edible oil, probably the same for ice cream.

thanks, I know McD have ice cream cones but I really meant ice cream sold in a small tub in supermarkets which I can take home, like those sold in supermarkets in the USA, UK and Canada.In these countries, there is a large variety of ice cream available all year round, Summer or Winter,
It is the same with chocolates; there is a very limited choice here and I also find it difficult to find bacon, cheese, curry powder or tinned cornbeef; I feel a quick trip over the border to Hong Kong is beckoning soon

Bringing Ice cream home from Hong Kong, sounds like a challenge.
I do think it is possible to get a cooler box that runs on batteries so it can remain cold for long
