Star Wars Day ?
Maybe it has to do with the disapproval of Dr Sun Yat-Sen, not all the big-wigs at the time thought it was the right approach to rid the world of Imperial China.
National Youth Day is celebrated in China every year on 4th May. It was established by the Government Administration Council of People’s Republic of China in December of 1949. It was established to honor the memory of the May Fourth Movement of 1919. It has been celebrated every year since 1949.
It is an official holiday, it is on the list of 2014 approved official holidays in China, and the reason why Chinese get a week off starting May 1, celebrating May 1 and May 4.

Because one thing is an official public holiday, and another thing is a work day for employees in the private sector. Government Offices, and schools are closed, every other place is open by now. If you have lived in China for na while, you should know this already !.

Incorrect. I live right next to a.middle school. They had classes today.

My stepdaughter is in middle school and she has no classes from last thursday until May 8 , 2014.

I am a middle school teacher and I am happy to report that yesterday, Sunday the 4th, was Friday. And that being the case it was indeed a school day.
Our holidays, and all the other schools here too, were Thurs, Fri and Sat.
Because today is a day that ends in "y" and not "no why". 'Work day' ends in 'y' and therefore, today is a work day - no why!
I have no idea and I wish someone could enlighten me as well. I had to go into work on Sunday and work Friday's schedule.... it's all so confusing!

Could anyone give me a single law or rule in China that is thoroughly or widely observed?
Someone (a Chinese) someday said that there are laws in China (no doubt) but that everyone has his own law....
