I have much the same experience. I generally feel safe in Zhuhai. I might think twice about what bar to get drunk in, but on a normal evening, walking my pitbull(ish) dog I feel perfectly safe. My wife is increasingly concerned about safety, however it is all based on rumor mongering via WeChat and the likes... almost none of her friends have ever been killed under suspicious circumstances.

actually, my main fear in Chinese society, walking around, has always been dognapping, since the pitbull(ish) dog is a purebread and very rare in China. Then of course there is the problem that I've seen people write about on "404 Page not found" that they have experience Chinese people picking up their fair haired kids, when confronted with it, just to give them a hug, but in reality kidnapping is a likely scenario.

Same in any major European country. I'm from the UK and you can't avoid CCTV cameras. Yet crime still happens there and in China.

But there is a difference with UK or any other Western country and China.

In China police is authority and you are supposed to oblige to all their request (you do not check if they have or do not have the right to ask for that).

Therefore violent crimes ration in China is noticeably lower than in so called 'democratic countries'.

Not saying it's better or worse - just stating the fact.

Example....when do you ever see Chinese traffic police doing their jobs? I only ever see them getting involved AFTER an accident. Yet they could have a field day pulling up and ticketing drivers for breaking driving rules. In the UK the traffic police are proactive.

Maybe there's not... you have ZERO facts to back up this assertion. Sure, you can get LOTS of data from the UK (and ANY country from 'the west') - but you won't be able to find the same data for China. A) because it's not make public, and B) reporting (and policing) here borders on the totally incompetent. Especially when you add in the amount of corruption involved. Domestic violence - in particular child abuse - is HUGELY under-reported.

And it's going to get worse, as the one-child policy brings into society all those spoilt little brats who think they can do anything - think how  they're going to raise their kids!

I can only comment on the UK police but they publish annual crime figures. Types, locations/areas, arrests and conviction rates. 

Violent crime has actually gone DOWN in the UK over many decades. An interesting correlation, and nothing to do with this thread, is that the rates of reduction of violent crime has actually followed the introduction of lead-free petrol.....

I would think twice about doing the same in majority of European cities - and these are already a lot better than majority of other places in the world.

The reason is very simple - the police in here has all the information they want to have and nobody is allowed to question it. 

In the past Central Eastern Europe was much safer place than is now due to exactly the same reason.

You apparently do not have this experience - nothing wrong with that - there is not much to envy ...

But a bit more modest approach can sometimes help not to get blinded by the 'other' propaganda ...

Like you I'm not afraid to walk down a Chinese street at night. I also spent 10 years before moving here walking through the streets of Manchester city centre every Saturday night going out and can remember one occasion when I had any problems. 

Yes violence happens pens in all cities. I've seen it happen between locals occasionally in GZ bit as a foreigner I feel safe here. 

I used to work in a factory area on the edge of Guangzhou and was always told by my Chinese colleagues not to go in the nearby village at night as it was dangerous. I used to go eating and drinking there! But why would my Chinese colleagues tell me not to go there?

But I know that in London there are kind of 'no go zones' and the same ones are in Hamburg and many other cities.

So far I did not really feel the same in Shanghai, Dalian or Chengdu.

Shenzhen then is different - some parts of Shenzhen I find dangerous.

You probably meant that when seeing that China apparently has one of the most sophisticated railway systems in the world and is one of the few countries who made it to the universe, so I find the statements like :

1) There are no good engineers in China

2) All Chinese are uneducated

a bit ridiculous and if the author tries to defend them by 'arguments' so quite entertaining.

My tongue-in-cheek comment about your tinted glasses is because almost every post you write is pro-China. A bit like ScotsAlan 's pro-CCP stuff except he can also see some negatives here. 

I've also never thrown anything at a server in a restaurant, I actually treat them with respect. I don't take offense to laowai, weiguoren or gweilo though I disagree with you on this some. A very small minority direct it at foreigners as a derogatory term. Haaallloooo in the street? Couldn't careless. My normal response is Ni Hao or Lei Ho depending if I know whether they are Cantonese speakers. 

Your other points? I've worked with some superb Engineers here but I also recognize that major Chinese industries were initially developed as joint enterprises, which were then developed further by Chinese companies once they'd learnt from the technology transfers that they either paid for or stole. Or didn't pay the licensing fees for the patents (who do you think Xiaomi hasn't broke into American or European markets yet? They'd get hammered for patent licensing fees!)

A lot of Chinese are still uneducated. A lot of those that are educated have no manners and some still shit & piss in the street!

China is my home now and I love living here but I'm not going to be quiet about things I think could be improved. I will though voice my view in a polite way with Chinese friends to avoid insulting them, I'm be more open with close western friends over a beer and I'll occasionally rant on here. One thing you won't see me doing is calling any Chinese people "Nongs" as I think it's offensive.

Oh, you can't - because of the lack of reporting of crime here.

Also, you are focusing on only ONE type of violent crime... while completely overlooking others. Child abuse is rampant in China, like in no other more civilised country. Same with domestic violence (normally M-F*), which wouldn't be tolerated overseas.

(* that's, 'male to female', not 'Monday to Friday' - although obviously still appropriate! There's also the S-S domestic violence - which could be Same-Sex if it were legal, but also could be Saturday & Sunday)
