Q: Why is it so difficult to find postcards here?
I know they're not as hot as they used to be, but why?
Even going to the post office, where all they have are stacks of 2010 Shanghai Expo postcards, the people there are unbelievably unhelpful and told me they actually didn't know where you could buy postcards. Nothing in the big supermarkets either - just hongbaos and flowery monstrosities.
Do people not send each other birthday cards at all?
If you go to touristy places you'll find post cards there. Especially tourist markets. People in China don't send postcards to much, or buy a pack of 10 and give them when they return from their travels...
Rongyus right. The tourist places have packs of postcards. Birthday cards are harder to find. The best place is fancy stationary shops. These kind of shops seem to have a lot of things, pens, notebooks etc but also birthday cards. I dont mean the tiny stationary shops, you need to find the big ones.
That is weird. They usually have some at the post office. But in average towns, the Post Office will be the only place to find them. Tourist cities you can get them everywhere. But usually, yah, you won't find them anywhere else.
As for Birthday Cards, not they don't send them and you won't find them. And that goes for all greeting cards. They just aren't into it. The only thing you will find them for is Chinese New Year.
I couldn't agree more. Since day one I've found it extremely difficult to find good quality, attractive postcards in China. The only place I've found half decent ones were in a touristy hutong in Beijing. Maybe Chinese don't have a habit of sending postcards so it's still a rather niche market? Can't think of any other reason.
What are you talking about no post cards? YOu can find a lot of places that sell postcards at some of the hutongs..they will even deliver the post card for you. If you go to Hong Kong and visit the great Peak there is a place where you can buy a post card and deliver it on a certain date in the future..
Even if you find any postcards, it would be interesting to find out how many of them get to there destination! 
I had a friend who has been touring china, sending postcards. He sent about 10 from various China Posts and NONE have arrived to people! haha!
3 members of staff probably hold the card while 5 stare at it and another 2 will then throw it in the bin when their bored with the picture.

Taobao is the best place. I got 20 postcards with images of student paintings of the city. 15rmb, delivery included.
