Q: Why is it so difficult to find taxis in certain parts of Beijing?

I went to the National Center for Performing Arts this weekend and there were 0 taxis outside; it was absolutely impossible to find anything other than buses (which stop running at 11) and it took me 2 hours to get home.

The NCPA is the fanciest place for opera and theatre in Beijing - why is it almost impossible to find a cab?

Same thing happened to me last night at 11 in Gulou, where there were only a few taxis, and all of them refused people.

You know taxi drivers are people to and they also have families....the later it is the fewer taxi drivers on the road they will be. Many of them seem to go home when it gets really really late and that's why they refuse to take some passengers a certain way because more than likely they are headed home to get ready for the next day.

There are a number of reasons: it can be because you might obviously look like a "lao wai", it can be because of what mattaya said, it can also be because of the time (rush hour), or because of the weather (rain). My advice to you is to always have a public transportation back up plan, and if its really late at night, do some research and ask around before hand about the taxi situation there.  There is also a number you can call that will send out a cab to where you are in the city.  Ask your cabbie the next time you take a taxi.
