Q: Why is it so difficult for people to shut the hell up in movie theaters?

Or when at the opera...or at the theatre...or at a concert.

I swear to God, you guys can say that China is only just developing or that it takes time for people to become educated or blablabla, this has nothing to do with education. It has everything to do with common sense and logic.

I watched a play this weekend, and phones were ringing left and right, people coming and going. A mother next to me was talking to her daughter out loud, playing games on her phone with her. What's wrong with people?

I agree and parents shouldn't bring kids to movie theaters if they know they won't sit still or won't pay attention. They should hire a babysitter so that everyone in the audience can enjoy the shows. I guess that's where you have to educate them. People see this happening all the time! I especially hate that at the movie theaters kids kicking chairs families talking to one another and speaking on the cellphone. What can you really do? I told them to be quiet or I kicked their chair once.

Yep.  Just watched The Hunger Games last night.  Somebody was using their iPhone to message back and forth for the entire 2 hour and 20 minute duration of the movie.  What the hell!  And why couldn't they flick the switch to put it on vibrate....nope, had to hear the little iPhone message jingle everytime.

And of course the dude a couple seats over having to (try to) explain every other scene to his gf/wife.  Out loud, full conversational voice.  I guess they don't really need to hear the dialogue from the movie; they can just read the chinese subtitles....

Luckily we sat at the end of the row, so no one passed directly in front of us....but there were plenty of comers and goers.  Ugh.

It's normal. My first year or so here I always let it go. Now however I straight call out to people to shut-the-fuck-up, turn of the phone, whatever. I have a rather fair fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese to make it work.

Of course there are those rare occasions where someone gets upset about being called out for their loudness, in which case I stand up and let them see I am almost 6ft 5inches tall, an anglo-meiguoren, and do obvously work out. Done and done.

I've never been to a movie theatre in China, i don't watch TV here either. I know about loud Chinese, I like it quiet when I go to eat in a nice restaurant. If the restaurant fills up after I get there it is always too noisy, I get headaches some times from being there. I took my girl friend and another girl I know out to dinner this week, hardly any customers, but the Chinese there were so noisy, I asked is there any way to make them be quiet. finally when the girl I brought asked me something, I yelled over everyone, ' I can't hear you',, if looks could kill my GF sure gave me one. I guess I'm not allowed to be louder than Chinese.

They don't have to be quiet anywhere. Not in college, theater, restaurant...it's not wrong in their culture to be loud wherever they go. There's no need to be considerate to others. We see it as rude, but they're used to it. It's just the way it is, unfortunately. That's why I never bothered to go to a movie theater in China.

I'm very puzzled with this question...
When i arrived in US i was asking myself the same question.
Why Americans cannot shut up their mouth... commenting, talking on the phone, making other type of noise while eating food.
So why talk about China? when the same thing happens in the US
