I think so,kids grow up like this. I was told they are country people, but I doubt that. different culture,, I see guys pee in the tree stands on the main drag, wonder how long until tree dies, Late last night when I am driving home, I see man squatting in middle of road. socially accepted for China, yes, for you no,, they sweep the streets every day, score still China 1, you 0

tomcatflyer:

Ted, it is not about whether they are from China, the city, the countryside or wherever. It is about being a decent human being with some kind of standards and respect for others. 300+ years ago people in London used to throw their shit out of the windows into the street until it was discovered that this causes disease to spread. We are always being told of Chinese culture and history being so much older than the West, but in some ways China is still centuries behind the west. I was in Beijing a couple of weeks back and saw a grandmother and mother help a child of four or five to shit right next to the bus stop and then pick it up with tissues, put it into her handbag and take away, presumably to dispose of. This is not behavior that any decent person partakes in and is simply inexcusable.

I say the Chinese accept this and we don't. I find it discusting especially watching men pee, women not so much or at all. But what can I do I'm in China, so I knew about this before,, . I'm used to watching where I walk, I'm a country boy.,,the crazy driving is my complaint. so i say score China 1, you 0, cause China wins

Not really.  My girlfriend thinks its disgusting, Ive also heard old people tutting as they go past.  Its the people with no 文化, uncivilized.  To be fair they probably are from the countryside but thats not really an excuse to be a dirty bastard.  They were just brought up uncivilized, probably unschooled and see no shame in behaving like a dog.

derek:

I think the countryside has nothing to do with it.  The city dwellers use that as an excuse for the behavior of their own kind.

Well I live in Shanghai and the only kids Ive seen shitting in the street have been non-Shanghainese, and I know that because their parents dont speak Shanghainese. They might not be from the countryside but they're certainly not from one of the big cities.

....and you regularly chat up the parents to ask where they are from while their offspring take a leisurely dump?

Its not that often I see a kid dumping in the street. The times I have seen it I've heard the parents speak. Twice its been the kids of shopkeepers and I've heard them speaking on several occasions, Why are you defending them?

Defending them? My question is regarding how in the heck do you know where people are from by watching their kids crap in the street. To me the behaviour is unacceptable. I don't care where they are from.

Yes, it is. Kids have this authority to pee or sh*t whenever they want.

wonder why diapers/nappies haven't hit off in China yet? thought it would be a big hit.

Until they stop making kids clothes with a cut out for them to piss and shit then it will keep continuing. Guessing parents just don't want to deal with nappies not to mention the waste it will generate from 300million kids (estimate) easier to sweep it away down the drain and for the fish to feed on.

Jíliú.hé:

it actually kills the fish that is why people got mad at Clinton he got in bed with Tyson and all the rivers in his state got polluted with chicken shit that it is also why he made gor his V.P to show how green he was.

Day before yesterday, an old lady with her kid. She (the kid, not the old lady) pooped IN the subway car (line 4). At least the old lady was nice enough to warn people not to step on it. Still, gee whizz....cool

Sorry fabby, but I got some news for you.

Much of what we believe in the west about public cleanliness and personal hygiene doesn't come from modern science. It comes from something called the "Sanitary movement". The sanitary movement was based on a now discredited theory called the "miasma theory of disease" which held that filth itself was the cause of disease. This theory was eventually supplanted by the Germ theory of disease.

Here in China, most people apparently lack almost any medical knowledge. They certainly don't have any of the western superstitions about how disease is spread. Around here, the bathrooms don't even have soap in them!

I would like to see a dog and child poop at the same time in the same position side by side and take a photo, put it on the sign and give them the thought of how animal like it really is. Culture or not, a cleaner shouldn't have to clean human feces from anywhere other than in the bathroom
