I'm not a big drinker, but I tasted a glass of Maotai brand baijiu a few nights ago at a banquet event. I've tasted normal "little green bottle" baijiu before, and thought both tasted terrible. After the banquet I found out how much a single bottle of this brand costs-- more than 1,000 RMB retail?! Thousands more for an "aged" bottle?!
Why is it so expensive? Who can afford to drink the stuff? Why does it taste so awful?
Do Chinese actually like the taste of it, or is it a status thing?
it all tastes like something to clean the house with...
I never bought much, no way to drink it. It's the same crap "rice wine'' just a different bottle to me. Another Chinese scam, a nicer bottle sells for more. Try grape wine. Since Chinese don't know how to drink except until they throw up and pass out, a bad high alcohol liquor will get you there faster. Thats the kind of drinking I did when I was a teenager, the only purpose of drinking like that is to give ugly people a chance to have sex.
