Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: why no male Chinese assistants?
It is a job that is exclusively female why is that
A former student of mine, English graduate (male), took on a part time job in a training school for children and left because he was pressured to 'camp it up' and behave in a more feminine manner, whereas he just wanted to be a TA.
TA's are seen in the 'childcare' role which is still perceived as 'woman's work', hence all the schools that wanted me to teach children 'because i was a woman' and as we all know, all women like children and want to be around them all the time.
it is ok for foreign guys to 'play the dancing monkey' because they are not Chinese, whereas it is probably not a masculine enough job for Chinese guys.
Although all the hairdressers i have ever seen in China are guys,
Eorthisio:
Because styling hair is very manly, just like carrying purses, or so Chinese think.
RachelDiD:
'probably not a masculine enough job for Chinese guys' ...which is funny, considering that I could take most Chinese guys in a fight...
Robk:
Me too. I would upvote Eorthisio and RachelDID.
Rachel, if you ever beat up a Chinese guy, please record it. You could add the caption... "So Chinese men like to beat up women? Not this time!"
It would go viral, and you would shatter so many egos and create such a lose of face that a black hole would form in the heart of China and destroy the world. But it would be worth it! If you feel the urge, please call me and I will make sure it is just 1v1 and keep the other cowards out of it.
RachelDiD:
Haha, I only have a month left in the human cesspool known as China--throwing punches the next time someone tries to steal from me might be gratifying. Sorrel is right about the ants on elephant effect that Chinese guys bring to a fight though. I don't think I could beat up 8 of the pansies at the same time...

i have observed in my English major classes a slight problem with gender equality when i was teaching at universities. i hak 30 students in the 4 different classes and 4 males in each class with 26 females, not bad for the male english major getting a date if they got game but that is usually a false start out of the blocks every time.
Could be lack of pay and social status. China takes traditional gender roles, and runs with them. Males are valued by their status, and how much money they earn. Even if guys want to be TAs, there is pressure to take a job that will be more acceptable by society.
At my uni classes 3 of the 4 professors which TA I've met were male. One was super shy, and afraid of the scary foreigners, one was super defensive over anything related to China and would often correct the Canadian professor "No, Taiwan IS part of China, you see". The third one was a super chill, cool guy you could easily hang out with.
It is just a social stigma and result of Chinese women having more benefits than Chinese males in learning English and teaching children.
Also, helping foreigners and children requires a lot of patience and most men in China believe they are the center of the Universe.
I met one and he was cool but a bit crazy and socially awkward (for both foreigners and Chinese). He got out of it and went into P.E. to teach kids swimming. He doesn't like that either... long hours... trying to keep kids from drowning... and parents yelling at him if their child can't swim like Michael Phelps... so pretty much the same just no foreigners.
