Q: Why is the population of China so large?
Can this be easily answered? I will offer my theories after I hear a few from our community...
'Cause it's so damn big. The population here isn't that different from that of India's, is it? That's about the same size. It's been inhabited longer than your other big countries like the USA and Australia, and in Russia they're just too damn cold to pull it out, it'd shrivle like a button mushroom. And your South American countries are all people who strolled across the ice from Asia in the first place apparently. As for your African countries, God knows, it's too damn hot, maybe they don't have the energy.
You know, I heard that one in four people in the world is actually Chinese. Now I have three brothers; Tom, Alan, and Xiao Wang. And you know, i've thought about this lonnng and hard, and I know.........it could well be Xiao Wang.
But I think it's Alan.
OK I am going to have ago at this although I am sure there are many reasons and I will not get them all.
1. The country is geographically huge so part of the answer has to be that if your country covers such a large area you will have a correspondingly large population. Sorry if that is a bit too simplistic.
2. A large part of the country is agricultural with a large poorly educated population. It does not surprise me in that situation that some people do not fully understand the link between sex and pregnancy. Added to the poor education is the lack of suitable birth control and the fact that many people here still think that sex is something not to be talked about it is little wonder that many people do not know what they should be doing.
3. In a society that expects the younger members of the family to care for the older as a duty I can understand in the past how so many families would want several children to spread the eventual load, and of course those children will also want to be adequately taken care of when their time comes.
4. More children for a poor farming family means that they can have more hands to work the fields so they can grow more of whatever it is they grow in order to sell more and make more money.
5. Given 3 and 4 above having more children also guards against the possible early death of another child. If a child of ten dies and the next youngest is eight then you do not have to wait so long for that one to take up the slack. Whereas if the child of ten dies, being an only child, you then have to wait for the wife to get pregnant again and raise the child to a corresponding age, a waste of those intervening years.

cool. your #4 made a lot of sense.
can't go with #2. even the most intellectually challenged among us knows that bumping uglies leads to the birth of those odd little creatures known as 'children'.
cant go with #1 from you or from the MartianMan. There are many huge countries... Oz, Rossiya, Brazil, North America (yes, I know it is a continent) that have been inhabited since Christ was a Corporal.. or even since homo sapiens differentiated from homo erectus.

Diverdude, it wasn't that long ago in the UK that some people still thought kissing could get you pregnant, or the opposite of that being that if you had sex standing up you could not get pregnant. There are many more of these stories and that is from a country that was comparatively well educated. I still stand by my second point that in a country where education has been poor, and possibly almost non-existent in some very remote areas, that it is all too possible that the real cause of pregnancy was not always understood as well as it should be.

Careful Martian , you are not the only off-worlder here, we of the vastly superior Sirius system are watching you. BTW have you tried flying these Tomcats they have here, so much fun it is like stepping back a few thousand years they are so antiquated, the still rely on something they call wings to keep them up, Hahaha!!!!!!
My sources (Chinese friends) tell me that back in the day, Chairman Mao had a policy that encouraged lots and lots of baby making....and it seems they rather outdid themselves.
-Large river valleys with a lack of tropical diseases. Africans really did used to die like flies.
What other countries have had large river valleys?
-India, Egypt, and Iraq. Oh, wow. Old cultures are there too? Wonder why?
-Personally how do some many people live in Indonesia? It's surrounded by salt water and made of islands?
Other countries were decimated by various plagues hundreds of years ago.
China was fortunate to never have something like Spanish Flu tear through it.
Chinas first major interruption to its growth rate came just a generation ago with the Cultural Revolution & Great Leap Forward but by then the population was at a billion.
They killed more people than several wars combined and even then they only marginally put a dent in China's population.

It is also 4th Largest country in the world area wise
Because in China's glorious 5000 year old history.
